"I wonder what now?"
"Probably just so kind of followup for Casey."
"I hope so."
Ken came out of the building in full uniform.
"Any problem officer?"
"None, I just forgot something this morning. Why though, are you anticipating one?"
"No, I am not, just didn't expect to see a car here."
Ken got on his way and we went inside.
"Thanks for lunch, Jeff. Does that count as our first date?"
"I suppose you could say that."
"Will there be more?"
"Always a possibility."
"Here's hoping."
Dana went to his apartment.
I spent the afternoon going through my email both personal and for the building. Luckily for me, there wasn't anything that needed seeing to.
I headed up to the roof just to check and see that things were as they should be.
Everything was as it should be, but movement in one of the buildings caught my eye. From what I could see, a guy was smacking a kid. I mean a full back of the hand to the kids face.
I grabbed my phone and dialed 911 and reported the child abuse. I stayed on the roof to see what else I could and the guy continued to beat on the kid.
I aimed my phone at the apartment across the way and zoomed in as tightly as I could and proceeded to capture as much footage as I could, right up until the guy noticed me and pulled the shade down. Before anything else, I emailed the footage to myself and to my brother. It would be too easy for something to happen to the phone.
I next dialed Alex, the building manager next door, and told him the police would likely be at his door in short order and why.
I went back downstairs as I knew the police would want to talk to me.
It was only a few minutes before a police car pulled up and I saw that it was Ken getting out. I stayed put until there was a knock on my door.
I opened it to find Ken standing there.
"I need to get a statement from you."
"I went up to the roof just to check on things. I saw through a window a guy about 5'10", mid-thirties maybe, brown hair. He was backhanding a teenage boy. I called and reported it and then proceeded to capture further blows with my phone."
"Can you send me that footage?"
"Sure thing. How's the kid?"
"On his way to the hospital to be evaluated."
"And the guy?"
"He'll be a guest of the city for at least a couple of days. If I were you Jeff, I'd watch my back if he gets released."
"Oh, I intend to. What's going to happen to the kid?"
"If we can't locate his mother he goes into the system."
"Here's hoping you find his mother."
"Sounds like you have first-hand knowledge of the system."
"Let's just say I've had encounters. My oldest brother is chief of police for his town."
Ken got on his way and Alex came over from the other building.
"Glad someone finally caught that bastard in the act."
"You knew?"
"I suspected but could never catch him at it."
"What about the kids mother?"
"I gave the police her last known address. Hope to hell she's still there. Anyway glad you caught the guy at it."
It was the next afternoon when I ran into Ken again.
"Heads up Jeff, that guy made bail today."
"Got it. How's the kid?"
"Still in the hospital for the time being."
"Any luck finding the mother?"
"No idea. That ball sits in family services court."
"Any reason the guy was beating on the kid?"
"If there is, the kid isn't saying, at least not to us."
"They going to need me to testify if and when it goes to court?"
"More than likely."
"Wonderful."
"You know what they say. No good deed goes unpunished."
"Yeah, later Ken."
"Later."
2 days later there was a knock at my door. When I opened it Ken and his partner were standing there in uniform.
"Jeff, we have a warrant for your arrest."
"On what charge?"
"Statutory rape."
"That's ridiculous."
"I know it, you know it, but the DA doesn't. let me read you your rights."
Which he did and asked me if I understood those rights.
"Yes, I understand. Let me guess who filed the charge. That idiot from next door."
"Yeah, but the kid is backing him up and did show signs of sexual trauma when he was admitted the other day."
"I may have seen the kid around the neighborhood, but I've never had any interaction with him, that I know of. It's always possible he was one of the kids my nephews were playing soccer with a while back."
"Hey, if it were up to me Jeff we wouldn't even be here. It's obvious to anyone with eyes what's going on, but the DA has to take every accusation seriously."
"That's what we elected him for. I'm not worried about it."
"You should be, not just for yourself, but I heard that a couple of the tenants are trying to adopt. Anything comes of this it could well put an end to that."
"Then best I get this taken care of ASAP. I assume I'll be able to call my lawyers from the precinct?"
"Absolutely and I'll pass the word to the guards that this is bogus. They tend to dislike this kind of thing."
"I appreciate that."
I was led out to the police car and taken to the precinct and processed. I was given my phone call and out on bail before supper.
naturally, none of this had gone unwitnessed and there were a load of questions asked once I got home.
"I'll do this once. This is a bogus charge brought by the guy next door whom I called the police on several days ago. I have little doubt that I will come out of this with no charges or jail time if it even goes to trial. I don't want any of you trying to take things into your own hands to see an end to this."
When I got into my apartment I decided I had better call, my brother.
"What's going on Jeff? Usually, I have to call you."
"Not this time big brother. I imagine you will be getting some calls from the city police in short order. I've been accused of statutory rape."
"What the hell Jeff?"
I proceeded to explain the whole situation to him.
"Sounds like your DA doesn't have enough to do. Even Evan could see this as a nuisance charge, and we both know he's not the sharpest tool in the box."
"Yeah, you'd think so, but he has to take all charges seriously. I have little doubt anything will come of this Mike, I just didn't want you to be blindsided. Otherwise, how are things going out there?"
"We're all sailing along just fine. I think I might finally get them to redo the corners after that last accident."
"About damn time too. I'll keep you posted on this thing as it develops."
"You do that little brother."
I hung up and settled in for the rest of the day.
The next afternoon my buzzer sounded and I looked out the window to see Mrs Adams from family services.
I went out and let her into my apartment, with the door open.
"Mrs Adams, what can I do for you today?"
"I've gotten word that you're accused of statutory rape of a young man."
"A charge which yet has to be proven and I assure you is quite false."
"Would you care to elaborate?"
I went through the whole thing from the rooftop to the accusation being made.
"That was the other thing I wanted to talk to you about. You witnessed the abuse?"
"Not only did I witness it Mrs Adams but I caught it on camera. If you would like I can forward the footage to you as it has already been provided to the police."
"If you would please. I'll be watching both cases, young man. I do hope you are found innocent, otherwise Mr Kershaw and Mr Daniels application will likely be dismissed."
