A High School Tale - Chapter 7
Francisco Sanchez sat in the back of the church on a wooden pew. He knew this church, his family had attended this church for many years. So many thoughts were circling his mind as he replayed the events that happened earlier in the day. He skipped going to work and just walked around town. Not only did he replay the earlier events but he also thought about his life with his son. He was very proud of Ignacio. He had no doubt in his mind that one day his son would be successful in anything he pursued. That's all he and Paola wanted for all their children. As all parents do, they wanted their children to be happy. He remembered all the struggles he went through trying to start a business with nothing in the bank and a heart full of dreams. The many nights he stayed up and prayed that he had made the right decision in starting a restaurant. He thanked God everyday for his wife. If not for Paola he would have given up long ago. Her faith in him kept his dreams alive. Now, his dreams were coming true. The restaurant was making a profit. He didn't have the worries he had as a young father. His mind recalled the times with Iggy. The many times he was at the restaurant with him. In a way Iggy didn't have a normal childhood. He spent most of his time at a small table doing his homework while he and Paola worked. It wasn't until his aunt Rosa had come to stay with them that he was finally able to get away from the restaurant and have a semi-regular childhood. He also wondered if Iggy had these gay feelings because he was absent from his life. Was Francisco the reason his son turned out to be a homosexual?
As he sat the words of his son echoed in his mind. "Gay" How can he be gay? Did we do something that caused this? He felt that he had failed as a father. He was so caught up in his thoughts that he didn't hear the approaching footsteps.
"Francisco."
He turned to see his wife standing there. As he looked up to her tears erupted from his eyes. He reached out his hand to his wife. Paola took his hand in her own and sat next to him. He gently kissed her hand. His eyes met hers.
"He is our son and he needs us right now," Paola whispered.
He nodded his head, "I don't know what to say to him. I know I hurt him when I told him he was no longer my son." He shook his head, "You know I didn't mean a word of it."
"I know." She smiled at her husband and squeezed his hand. "We need to show him that we love him no matter."
"Did we do something to cause this?," his eyes pleaded.
"No, he was born this way. There was nothing we did. I had suspected this about him but I didn't want to say anything until I was sure. I have been reading some material. All the studies say that gay men are born this way. It's not a choice."
"I don't understand. It's not natural."
"What is natural?"
"What about what the Bible says about this? It is a sin."
"I don't believe it. God doesn't make mistakes. I believe that God made our son the way he is and it is no mistake or sin. What we think is not natural to us is natural to our son. I don't think he woke up one day and decided to be gay. I don't think that for a minute." Paola said as she stood. She pulled her husband up to stand, "It's time to go talk to him."
They left the church behind. They walked into the cool evening and headed in the direction of their home and to the son that they both loved dearly.
Carson finally made it home to dinner with his mother and brother. Right away both Mary and Parker knew something was on Carson's mind. As they began to eat the silence in the room was unsettling. After watching Carson play with his food without eating a bite Mary's curiosity got the better of her.
"Carson, is something wrong? You've been quiet ever since you got home and you haven't touched your dinner."
Carson sat there still in his own thoughts and didn't hear his mother. He continued to stare at his plate and play with his food.
"Carson. Didn't you hear me?" Mary asked.
"Bro, mom's talking to you." Parker spoke louder trying to get his brother's attention.
Carson finally lifted his head and looked at his mother and brother. "What?" He didn't know what was going on.
"I said, is something bothering you? You've haven't touched your dinner and you've been very quiet."
"I'm not hungry." He looked down at his plate again and finally pushed it away.
Mary placed a hand on her son's hand, "Honey, you know you can talk to me if there's anything wrong. I'm a good listener." She smiled at her son.
A faint smile crossed Carson's face, "I know mom. It's just something that's been on my mind. You don't need to worry."
Mary squeezed his hand, "Well, if you need to talk, I'm here."
At that moment Carson felt his phone vibrate. He looked at his phone to see that it was Iggy calling. He stood up, "I need to take this." He lifted his plate and headed to the kitchen sink. He opened the back door and stepped outside sitting on the cement steps. He opened the phone and answered.
"Hey, how are you?"
"I'm headed home. My parents weren't at the restaurant. I'm not sure where they are but I guess I'll just wait for them at home."
"Okay, how are you feeling?"
"Honestly, I'm scared. I almost wished I had lied to my parents. I don't know what I'd do if I lost them." Iggy's voice cracked as he spoke.
"Stay calm. You won't know anything until you talk to your folks." Carson's heart was definitely going out to Iggy. "Do you want me to come over and stay with you?"
"I wish you would but I think it would be better if I faced them alone. Thanks for the offer. "
Carson smiled, "Are you sure?"
"Yes, you've done enough already." Iggy replied
.
"Well, I wish I could do more."
"You've done more than most people. Thank you."
Carson smiled, "You're welcome. If you need anything please call."
"I will, good bye."
"Bye."
Carson pushed the end button and turned to return to his family only to see his mother standing behind the door looking at him.
She opened the door and stepped onto the steps. She sat down next to her son.
"Is everything alright?" She asked.
"I hope so." He looked at his mother. "Mom, I need to talk to you about something.
"Sure honey. Let me just finished cleaning the kitchen and we can talk." She stood and reached her hand out to her son. Carson grabbed her hand and stood.
Mary and Carson cleaned up the evening meal dishes and were both seated at the kitchen table. Mary had made them both a cup of tea and sat waiting for her son to talk. After a few moments Carson looked into his mother's eyes.
"I have a friend who's going through a rough time in his life."
Mary had concern written on her face, "Is he in any sort of trouble?" She silently prayed that her son was not involved in any kind of trouble.
"No," he paused for a moment to try and form the right words in his thoughts. "His parents found out that he's gay. He's alone and scared right now and I'm worried about him."
Mary picked up her cup of tea and took a sip of the hot liquid. "Do you think he's in any danger?" She thought of the many teens that were rejected by parents once they found out their child was gay.
"I spoke with his mom earlier today and she seemed okay with it. It was his dad that had difficulty accepting him. He even went as far as to tell his son that he no longer saw him as a son. " A tear escaped Carson's eye and slowly ran down his cheek. He looked into his mother's eyes, "How can any parent do this to their kid?"
His mother shook her head, "I don't know. The love between parent and child is the strongest love that's in existence.
"I don't know what I'd do if something happened to him."
Mary realized that her son's feelings for this boy was far more than just friendship. She placed a hand upon her son's hand. "Do you love this boy?"
At hearing the question Carson sat straight up. His eyes filled with tears and his hands began to tremble. His tears stained eyes met his mother's eyes as he silently nodded his head. Carson stood up wanting to flee but his mother still held his hand. "Please mom let me go," he managed to speak in a whispered voice filled with emotion.
Mary stood and pulled him into her arms. Carson laid his head on her should and wept. Mary held her son in her arms as his body shook and wouldn't let him go, "Oh honey, nothing has changed. You are still my baby. Is doesn't matter to me who you love. You hear my words Carson? You will always be my son and I love you no matter.
"I hope I'm not too much of a disappointment to you." Carson said.
Her voice rose as she answered her son. "Carson Michael Andrews you listen to me young man. You will never be a disappointment to me. Do you understand?"
A fresh batch of tears erupted from his eyes as his mother's words took root in his mind. "Yes ma'am, I understand. He looked into his mother's eyes. "Mom, I'm not sure if I'm in love with Iggy. I just know that I really like him. Every time I see him my hearts starts to pound in my chest and I get this weird feeling in my stomach."
Mary smiled at her son, "Wow, it certainly sounds like love to me." A look of concern washed over her face, "Tell me, do you think he has the same feelings for you?"
"Yes, I do. I think he's in the same boat as I am. We're both new to this and don't have a clue as to how or what to do."
Carson's mother nodded her head, "I wouldn't be too worried about what to do. Things will come naturally. Don't rush things and always consider his feelings and you should be fine."
He hugged his mother, "Thanks mom."
A single lamp lit the interior of the sitting room as Iggy sat and waited for his parents. He had telephoned his Tia Ofelia's house in search of them but was told that his parents weren't there. He spoke briefly to his brothers and sisters telling them to be good and to mind Tia Rosa and Tia Ofelia.
He had been waiting in the sitting room for about half an hour when he finally heard the front door open. His heart began to beat faster as he could hear the voices of his father and mother. He nervously stood waiting to see what they would have to say to him. His palms were sweaty and he could feel the room begin to heat up.
He stood as a statue as his parents entered the room. He searched their eyes. His parents looked tired. It was probably the first time he could remember them looking this way. They were holding hands. In another time Iggy would have laughed at seeing them hold hands but he didn't feel this was a time for laughter. He silently prayed that he would be able to laugh with his parents again. Again he thought things would have been better if he had lied to his parents about being gay. But what is done, is done.
His parents stood in front of him. The tension in the room seemed to be closing in on Iggy. Finally his mother spoke, "Ignacio, your father has something to say."
Iggy's eyes came to rest on his father. He searched his father's face for anger or any kind of emotion that would give him a clue as to what his father was thinking. What he found was only a blank expression. His father seemed to struggle with his words. His mother continued to hold her husband's hand. He seemed to draw strength from her touch.
Francisco gulped down air as he tried to get rid of the lump in his throat. "Ignacio..." his voice cracked as he tried to get the words to leave his mouth. Another gulp of air. "Ignacio, ...I'm sorry. I was wrong to say those words to you."
Tears flooded Iggy's eyes as he listened to the words of his father. Did he hear his father right? He replayed his words in his mind as he stared at his father in wonder.
"I love you son and I should have never said those words to you. Please forgive me." His father gestured to his son to come to him. Iggy flew across the room and into his father's arms.
"I love you son." Francisco said as he held his son. Iggy couldn't hold back the sobs and began to cry in his father's arms. Iggy felt his mother's arms surround him.
"We love you son," his mothers words were soft and close to his ear. "We will always love you."
Iggy couldn't believe the words of his parents. A great burden lifted from his heart as he was in his dad's arms. He stepped back and tried to blink his tears away.
His father looked into his eyes, "I will try to understand and not judge you. I will need time mijo. Please be patient with me."
Iggy nodded, "I understand Papi." He smiled at his father.
Paola smiled seeing her husband and son reunited. She opened her arms and Iggy slipped into her embrace.
"Iggy, I met your friend earlier today," she said.
Iggy's bodied stiffened in her arms. "My friend?"
"Yes, your friend Carson was here looking for you. You were upstairs asleep. Did you see him?"
"Yes, mommy I did see him."
Mother and son separated, "He was very concerned about you."
Iggy nodded his head, "He is a good friend."
Paola looked at her son the way mothers do and knew Carson was more than just a friend.
Paola turned to her husband, "I'm hungry, can you start some dinner? It's been a long day and I don't really feel like cooking."
Francisco nodded his head and started for the kitchen.
She turned back to her son, "Ignacio I know you have feelings for Carson. I just want you to be careful. I don't want you to get hurt. You have a very sensitive heart and I'd hate to see it broken."
Iggy smiled at his mother, "I know. I promise I will be careful." He took his mother's hand in his. "I'm still getting to know him and I will take things slow. We are both new to this and I don't want to rush into things with him."
"That's a good start," she smiled. "I'm hungry let's go help your father with dinner."
That evening before bed Iggy called and talked with Carson. He explained what took place with his parents. Carson was glad that everything turned out for the better. He also shared with him about his talk with his mother. Iggy was glad to hear that both of them were open to their parents and he felt much better.
"In a nice way I feel kinda free," Iggy said. "I've been worried about this for so long."
"I have to say that I've never felt like this," Carson confessed.
"I'm sure you are going through some struggles." Iggy said trying to help him deal with his new feelings.
"I still wonder if these feelings are real."
"What do you mean?" Iggy asked.
"I'm still trying to sort through these new feelings. It's true I've never really had a girlfriend and now I'm wondering if the reason I didn't was because I had these other feelings."
"You mean "gay" feelings?" Iggy inquired.
"Well, I guess if you had to put a label on it you could call it that." There was a pause before he continued speaking, "These feelings are so natural to me. It's like I've finally discovered something that's been missing in my life. It's like finding the final piece to a puzzle. Does that make sense?"
Iggy was nodding his head as he listened to Carson, "Yes, it makes sense. You've discovered the true you and I'm glad that I'm here with you to learn and grow together."
"Well, you already know that I'm a very good student," Carson said.
"I have no doubt that you will be a quick learner," he smiled.
Carson yawned, "Are we still on for tomorrow? I still need to work on getting my grades up."
"You bet your ass," Iggy giggled.
"You know you sound cute when you giggle?"
Iggy giggled again, "Thanks."
"Very sexy," Carson whispered.
"I'll see you tomorrow," Iggy said willing himself not to giggle.
"Okay, I'll see you tomorrow."
"Good night."
"Good night babe," Carson said.
Dear readers, thank you all for being patient with me. I do hope that this chapter was worth the wait. I had some personal problems and computer mishaps that I was dealing with and it took away from the time I used to write. Things are getting back on track and I hope that I can get back to writing at a quicker pace. Thank you all for the emails. I try to answer them all but a few slip through the cracks. Apologies to you if I haven't answered your email.
A few of you asked if I had other stories. I only have one other story. I do have to warn you though that the story is not finished. http://nifty.nisusnet.com/nifty/gay/college/john-and-mateo If you'd like to comment on this story please use the kavik66@gmail.com address.
