Chapter 5
Since Terry and I were going to be staying in the basement, Emily was most likely going to be using my room and there were some things I had to take care of before Terry and I started getting things to bring downstairs. The most important of all was my computer. I had some things on there that I didn't want anyone to see.
I didn't mind letting her use my room, but the computer was a temptation that I knew she wouldn't be able to resist. The first thing I did was set up another account on the computer. Terry could use my account as I didn't have a problem with that, but there were things I had stored in my files that were just not something Emily needed to see if she went snooping. Knowing her, she probably would.
Terry watched my fingers fly over the keyboard and move the mouse around while he stood behind me lightly tickling the back of my neck with his fingers.
"Babe, if you keep doing that we're not going to be able to get much done, but god does that feel so good!" I told him, feeling my body begin to tingle in pleasure.
"Sorry babe," Terry said, dropping his arm to his side.
"Don't be sorry babe. That felt really good, but just you wait till we're down in the basement," I said with a wicked smile on my face.
"I can't wait!" Terry said enthusiastically.
With Terry no longer getting me all excited, I finished getting my computer ready. I had finished making an account for Emily to use while she was using my room, and I made sure her account didn't give her access to any of my private files.
Terry helped me take the clothes out of my dresser, and putting them into a garbage bag which I always kept in my room. It was much easier to keep it up there because I never knew when my mother would come up the stairs and demand that I clean up what she calls the pig sty that is my room.
As it was, I didn't need to bring much down to the basement with us. I did make sure I took my Nintendo Wii system and games, as well as a box which contained items in it that I really didn't want Emily to find. Terry was curious as to what was inside the box, but all I would tell him was to wait until we were all settled in downstairs.
We spent most of the time in silence, which gave me an opportunity to think about all that had happened since going to the park. Meeting Terry was entirely unexpected, but falling in love with him was something that I would never in my wildest dreams have thought possible. And yet, I knew I was madly in love with him, with every moment that we were together being very special. There was no doubt in my mind that Terry felt the same way. I planned to spend as much time with him as I could.
Then there was the news my father had given me about being accepted as the chief lifeguard at Nelson Park. Swimming was one of my favorite things to do, and after taking first aid in scouts, I was equally interested in being able to help others. My parents had enrolled me in an advanced first aid training course with St. John's Ambulance, and I ended up learning more there than I had in scouts.
Most of the first aid course centered around CPR, which was something that was mandatory for anyone wanting to become a life guard. My parents were so proud of me when I came home and passed the course with a ninety-eight percent grade. That high grade was what pretty much guaranteed me a position as a lifeguard. That was a couple of years ago, and I had to get re-certified which I had also passed, but this time with a one hundred percent score.
My father running into that fawn who was right now in the lap of Terry's sister was something I don't think anyone was prepared for. My one hope was that we were able to find her a home soon, so that she could grow up and live in peace. There was always the risk that one day she would be hunted down when hunting season started if she had stayed in the wild. I was determined to make sure that was not going to happen to her.
Returning my thoughts to the task at hand, Terry and I finally finished gathering up all the stuff we needed. We then went downstairs to the basement where my mother had just fixed the bed for us. The room in the basement was actually fairly large. My father once wanted to turn it into an entertainment room, but seeing as how he and my mother before were usually never home, it didn't make much sense to him at the time. With them now deciding to spend more time together as a family, I had a feeling that things were going to change.
"Okay Simon, every thing is ready except for where to keep Powder for the night," my mother said, noticing Terry and I standing there with everything we had brought down.
"Well he could sleep in the corner I guess," I suggested.
"I don't think so babe," Terry said.
"What do you mean?" I asked him.
"Well, I'm betting that Powder's going to want to be close to you when it's time for bed."
"Damn, I didn't think about that," I said.
"Yeah, well, I don't mind babe. So long as we're together."
"You got that right," I told him. "Okay, let me just put this stuff down over here and I'll go get the dog bed out of the closet," I said, putting the bag of clothes down at the foot of the bed and heading for the closet in the hallway.
"We'll have to keep the door closed tonight," my mother told us. "We can't have Powder roaming the house at night."
"I know Mom," I told her, coming back from the closet with the dog bed in my hands. It was a fairly large bed, but then Sasha was a pretty big dog. I don't know what breed she was, but I did know that she had long white hair all over her body. My mother used to complain about all the dog hair that got all over everything, but I knew she loved her.
Actually, all of us were sad to see her have to be put to sleep. She suffered from kidney failure, and it was the only thing that could be done for her. There was no way we were going to let her suffer and force her to take these huge pills everyday.
With everything settled, and my Nintendo Wii set up on the spare TV we kept in the basement, it was time to bring Powder downstairs with us. My mother had long since left Terry and I alone after she had finished with the bed, and he and I did manage to get some time to hold each other and kiss while we sat on the bed. It had been a while since we had some time alone, and we were both anxious to be staying down there alone all night long.
"Come on babe," I said, moving my face away from his. "Let's get Powder's bed, and then get her downstairs. That way we can have the rest of the day to ourselves."
"Sounds like a plan babe, but I'm thinking we should have dinner before we settle down for the night," he said.
"Oh you're right!" I said, my stomach suddenly feeling empty. "I guess I was just so excited at being able to spend time with you; I forgot."
"You forgot about food?" Terry asked laughing. "Not a chance in hell babe."
"You're right about that dude," I replied laughing with him. As fast as I could, I went to the hall closet an grabbed Sasha's old bed, and I put it beside my side of the bed which was facing away from the door to the room.
Terry and I then ran up the stairs and into the living room where Powder was now on the floor resting. She had obviously heard us and her head jerked up with a start. Upon seeing us, she tried to stand up, then slowly made her way towards me.
"Hello Powder," I greeted her, letting her nuzzle the palm of my hand. "You ready to go downstairs to your new bed?" Of course I never expected an answer, but she did look up at me. The beautiful red eyes of hers could melt anyone's heart, and they certainly did mine. Bending down to pick her up, I felt her relax in my arms. Terry stayed upstairs while I walked down to the basement and put her on the dog bed. She seemed to like it a lot and it wasn't too long before she was fast asleep, giving me the opportunity to go back upstairs to be with my boyfriend.
Dinner that night was pretty light, given that everyone was pretty tired from the long drive home and the events of the last two days. While we were eating, I had come up with an idea, and I wanted to see how my parents would feel about it.
"Dad, I was thinking about what to do about Powder," I started.
"You know he can't stay here son," my father replied quickly.
"I know that dad, but I know you were thinking of calling the government tomorrow, but what about calling Uncle Tim instead? He's a veterinarian and he probably knows someone that has a reserve around that can take Powder."
"That's not a half bad idea son. It's still too late to call him now, but first thing in the morning I will. I'm sure he'll be able to suggest someone that can care for Powder."
"Damn babe!" Terry said, giving me a playful punch in the shoulder. "You're one smart dude! How did I get so lucky to find a boyfriend like you?
"I'm the one who's lucky babe," I said looking at Terry.
"Alright you two, enough of this mushy stuff at the table. You're going to make your mothers cry," David said smiling.
"No Dad, that's not mushy. This is mushy!" Terry said picking up his fork which had some mashed potatoes on it. He threateningly held it between his fingers on the end of the handle, while playfully bending it back with his other hand, pointing it in his father's direction.
"Don't you dare, son!" he said laughing. I knew he wasn't going to let the potatoes fly in the house, but it was still funny to see my boyfriend playing like
that with his father. My father of course didn't help much and was laughing as hard as I was.
"Better not babe, they might try to keep us apart longer tonight by making you clean up the dishes and the table, and the potatoes," I suggested to Terry.
"You're lucky my boyfriend was here to protect you Dad," Terry said, turning the fork around and putting the potatoes in his mouth. "But next time you won't be so lucky," he said after swallowing.
"Anytime, anywhere son," David laughed.
The rest of dinner went by without incident. Terry's and my parents talked amongst themselves, mostly about Burlington, and all there was to do. I did look over at Emily who was looking like she was missing out on things.
I leaned over towards Terry. "Babe, I know we wanted to be alone tonight, but do you think for this night we could make an exception?" I asked him quietly.
"What do you mean love?" he asked.
"Look at Emily," I told him, which he discretely did.
"Ouch. I've never seen my sister look like that. Are you sure though babe?"
"Yeah. One night isn't going to kill us, and she is family. The bed's big enough for all of us."
"You know, I really do love you babe," Terry said, giving me a quick kiss on my cheek. Then he turned to his sister. "Hey Emily," he said, grabbing her attention which before had been on her plate, picking at her food.
"Yeah?" Emily said, raising her head to look at her brother.
"Why don't you join us tonight, and then you can spend some time with Powder."
"Really? You wouldn't mind? But what about Simon? Don't you two want to be alone?" she asked, bewildered.
"Terry and I can be alone any time, Emily," I told her. "You're family, and I don't like it that you're feeling left out."
"Yes! I would love to! I want to sleep with Powder." Emily said excitedly.
"Are you sure Emily?" Kathy asked her. "There's only one bed down there, that means you'd have to share with Terry and Simon."
"Oh I don't mind that Mom," Emily said. "I used to climb into Terry's bed if I got scared when he babysat me."
"She's right Dad," Terry said. "Sometimes she'd come into my room and crawl into bed with me and I held her until she went to sleep."
"I know Son," David said. "When your mother and I came home one night, and saw that she wasn't in her room we got worried and went to your room to ask you where she was, and then we saw her asleep next to you. It was the sweetest thing we had ever seen."
"I didn't know you knew that," Terry said, beginning to blush with embarrassment.
"Don't be embarrassed Terry," Kathy said. "Your father and I were very proud of you that you would do that for your sister. But getting back on topic, if it is all right with you and Simon, I have no objections to Emily staying with you two for the night. What about you Anna?" she said looking at my mother.
"Simon's always been a very caring boy. I have no problems with them spending the night downstairs. Although we shouldn't make a habit of it."
"Hey Mom," I said, getting another idea. "What about Sam next door? Do you think that Emily would get along with her?"
"That's a wonderful idea Simon," My mother said. "Ever since Sam got sick, all her friends wouldn't play with her."
"Sam's a girl?" Emily asked, obviously confused. "I thought Sam was a boy's name."
"It is dear," Kathy said smiling. "But sometimes people like to use a shorter version of their full name. With girls, Sam is short for Samantha."
"Oh okay," Emily said. I could tell that she was still excited about the opportunity of sleeping downstairs with Terry and me. "What's wrong with Sam though?" Emily asked.
"Well, Sam got really sick and she hasn't been able to go out and play. She's been in the hospital a few times. We've felt really bad for her and her family, and Simon spends as much time over there with her as he can. But what she needs is a girl her own age that can play with her," my mother said.
"How old is she?" Kathy asked.
"She's eleven right now," I answered.
"How did she get sick?" David asked.
"Well, she has a heart condition which no one knew about until one day she collapsed. Thankfully she was near a hospital when that happened otherwise she might not have made it."
"Oh dear, poor thing," Kathy said in shock.
"Is she going to be okay?" Emily asked worriedly.
"We hope so dear," my mother told her. "She needs an operation to correct the problem. But she can't go out and play since she has to take it easy until then."
"I want to go see her," Emily told her mother, who looked at my mother.
"I'll call up her mother tomorrow morning and see if Sam would be able to have some company," my mother promised.
"Okay. I hope she gets better," Emily said.
"I' know she will Emily," I told her.
After dinner, Terry, Emily, and I helped clean off the table and bring the dishes into the kitchen. My mother and Terry's mother wouldn't let us help out in the kitchen and we were told to get ready for bed. By now it was almost ten thirty, and I was utterly exhausted. One look at Emily and I could tell that she was only awake by sheer determination alone.
"Come on Emily, let's get you changed into your PJs and then it's time for bed," Kathy said.
"Okay Mom," she said, slowly following her mother up the stairs to the spare room where Terry's mother and father were going to be sleeping.
A short while later, a rather sleepy looking Emily walked down stairs where Terry and I were waiting in the living room.
"I'm ready now," Emily said, looking at us. Terry and I had also got ourselves ready for bed, choosing to sleep in our track pants.
"Okay Emily, lets go," Terry said, taking her hand. The three of us said our good nights to our parents, then headed downstairs, closing the basement door behind us. Terry had already turned on the hallway light so that we could see where we were going and wouldn't trip down the stairs.
The basement itself isn't your typical basement. Most basements that I had seen were unfinished and consisted of concrete walls with a bunch of overhead pipes and wires showing. My parents though weren't satisfied with that, opting instead to try to make every part of the house as warm and comfortable as possible.
In fact, I had helped my father a couple years back finish the basement. We had torn down the old walls that barely covered the concrete, and replaced it with proper two by four studded walls filled with insulation and moisture barrier, then covered with dry wall and painted. For the ceiling, my father decided to use a drop ceiling. The room in which the bed was even had a gas fireplace. In the corner beside the fireplace was the entertainment center where the TV and my Nintendo Wii was, as well as the five disc CD player and DVD player.
There was also a bathroom with a full bathtub, and across from that, my father had built a computer room where he kept his computer and all his work documents. When my father wasn't busy in his office, he'd either be sitting on the couch bed, which we were going to be sleeping in, watching TV, or upstairs reading the newspaper in the kitchen.
Terry and I led Emily down into the basement and into the main room where the bed was. Powder was still asleep in the dog bed, and Emily immediately went over to pet her. Powder was startled awake by Emily's touch, but immediately settled back down when she saw it was us. Lowering her head, she went back to sleep.
"Come on Emily, time for bed," I told her. Reluctantly Emily left Powder's bed and climbed up onto the bed.
"I wish we could keep her," Emily said.
"I know Emily," Terry said. "But I'm sure we'll find her a good home tomorrow and then we can go see her whenever we want to."
"You think so?" Emily asked.
"Yeah, I'm sure of it," he replied. "Now where do you want to sleep?"
"I want to sleep beside Powder," she said predictably.
"Okay then, but you need to get off the covers so we can get into bed," I said.
"You'll have to make me," she said playfully giving Terry and me a smile.
"Oh I see how it's going to be," I said, a wicked smile forming on my face.
"I say it's time for a tickle attack," Terry said, slowly, much like a cat would, crawling onto the bed and moving towards her.
"You wouldn't dare!" she said, giggling.
"Oh wouldn't I?" Terry replied, then pounced on her and began to tickle her ribs making her cry out in laughter.
"Simon your boyfriend's going to make me pee the bed!" she screamed.
"Oh you better stop then Terry, I don't want to sleep in a wet bed," I suggested, still smiling.
Terry reluctantly stopped tickling her, and she jumped out of bed and ran to the bathroom. A couple minutes later she came back into the room. Terry and I had already climbed under the covers and I was resting with my head on his bare chest.
"Hey, where am I supposed to sleep?" she asked us, as we had pretty much taken over the whole bed.
"Right here sis," Terry said, the two of us scooting over a bit and giving her room to climb up onto the bed beside Terry.
"You two look so cute like that," she said.
"Thanks sis," Terry said, turning is head and giving her a kiss on her cheek after she had pulled the covers over top of her.
I then raised my head, and looked into Terry's face. "Good night babe," I said. "I love you." Then I lowered my lips to his, and gave him a long, gentle kiss which he returned, wrapping his arms around me.
"Eeeww! Gross! Kissing!" Emily said beside us, giggling, which made Terry and I separate and laugh.
"Good night sis," Terry said.
"Good night Emily," I said, leaning over to give her a quick kiss on the cheek.
"Good night," she said, still giggling.
Soon the three of us were fast asleep, me with a smile on my face, and my head on my boyfriend's chest.
* * *
The next morning, I woke up to something wet and warm on my face. Slowly opening my eyes, I was greeted by a skinny white thing with red eyes and a pink nose. Whatever it was was licking my face. Groaning, my eyes began to focus and become accustomed to the light that was coming in from the windows. There on the bed laying beside me and licking my face was Powder.
"Hello little girl," I said to her, trying to escape from that wet tongue as best I could. I guess the sound of my voice woke up Emily as she sat up in bed, and rubbed the sleep out of her eyes then looked at Powder and Me.
"Aw, that is so cute!" she said. How she could be awake that fast is beyond me. I was still trying to wake up, though the wet tongue on my face was doing a good job at speeding up the process. Terry lay beside me, just now beginning to stir.
"I need to go to the bathroom," I said, feeling my bladder suddenly demanding to be emptied.
"I'll take Powder for you Simon," Emily suggested.
"Thanks Emily," I said sitting up and carefully lifting the fawn over Terry's body and placing her in front of Emily. Then I hurriedly got out of bed and ran to the bathroom. A couple minutes later, much relieved, I came out of the bathroom to see Terry and Emily petting the fawn. She saw me immediately, and tried to stand up. It wasn't easy for her on the bed, and I rushed to the bed and picked her up, placing her on the floor. I didn't notice any accidents in the room, so I guessed that she needed to go to the bathroom.
Throwing on a shirt, I started to go up the stairs, while Terry made his way to the bathroom. Powder followed me, and so did Emily, as we headed up the stairs. Powder wasn't as sure of herself on stairs yet, so I had Emily open the basement door and I picked Powder up, walking up the stairs.
Once on the main floor I headed to the back door with Powder close behind me. Unlocking the door, I slid it open and Powder pushed passed me, stepping out onto the balcony.
She was much better at going down stairs than she was climbing them, and was soon running around the back yard. She did eventually find a place to do her business reminding me that I'd be the one that had to clean up after her while she was here.
"Emily, can you stay here with her while I go get some milk ready for her? I bet she's really hungry."
"Okay. But can I feed her?"
"Sure, I don't see why not," I said, giving her a smile. While I went inside, I saw her walk down the stairs of the balcony and head towards Powder. In the kitchen, I took out a pot and filled it with water then put it on a burner on the stove. Turning the burner on high, I took out the baby bottle and put a new bag into it. I then got out some more of the goat milk and filled up the bottle, screwing on the cap when I was done.
Terry, by this time, had finished in the bathroom downstairs and came up into the kitchen. I took one look at him and immediately leaned against the counter top, laughing.
"Hey! What are you laughing at?" he demanded to know.
"Babe, have you looked into the mirror today?"
"No why?" he asked.
"You should. Trust me," I said, tears now streaming down my face. I couldn't look at him for fear that I wouldn't be able to stop laughing. He went back downstairs to back into the bathroom. I heard him swear loudly, even from up in the kitchen which made me laugh even harder.
Terry soon came back up the stairs his hair, which had before been standing up on end much like Don King's had, was now laying flat like it usually was, but was now fairly wet.
"I'm sorry for laughing like that babe," I told him, drawing him into a hug and giving him a kiss."
"Nah, don't be. After I finished cursing my bed head, I realized how it must have looked to you and I even started laughing a bit. But it was a pain to get own," he replied.
"I bet it was. But you look cute any ways. Oh and that hair cut that you suggested I try out? You should too. I think you'd look really cute like that."
"I might just do that then babe. But first, don't you think you should take care of something?" he asked.
"What do you mean babe?"
Instead of answering, he looked over in the direction of the stove and nodded his head toward it. I looked over at the stove only to see the water boiling over the edge of the pot and onto the stove.
"Oh shit!" I said.
"Hey, watch the language young man!" my father said, walking into the kitchen. Then he saw the water boiling over on the stove. "Oh shit!"
"Honey!" my mother almost shouted, tapping the back of his head with the palm of her hand.
"Sorry dear," my father said, then came over to the stove where I had pulled the pot off the burner. "What were you trying to do Simon?" my father asked.
"I was getting the water ready for to warm up the milk for Powder," I said.
"Let me do that Simon," my mother said and grabbed the bottle off the counter and put it into the pot. "You go outside with Terry to be with Powder. I think Emily is having some fun with her right now from the sounds of it."
"Yeah she is," I chuckled. "I think she has fallen in love with Powder."
"We all have, son," my father said.
"Hey what's all the commotion down here?" David asked, coming into the kitchen followed by Terry's mother.
"Sorry about that Dave," my father said. "I still have a lot to teach my son about cooking." That last bit was said with a smile as he looked over at me, causing me to blush.
"Come one babe," I said to Terry. "Lets go outside and join your sister,"
Terry and I went outside, and caught up with his sister who was happily playing with Powder. Powder, for her part, seemed to be enjoying herself just as much. Seeing me however, made her stop and come up to me, nuzzling her nose into my hand.
My mother soon called out to me, and I ran back to the house, taking the now warm bottle of milk from her then returning to Powder. I'm sure that she was able to smell the milk in the bottle as she came up to me looking hungrily at the bottle I carried.
"She's really beautiful," Emily said, sitting down beside me as I handed her the bottle. Emily held the bottle out for her and she immediately began to suckle at the rubber nipple, drinking as fast as she could.
"Yes she is Emily, and hopefully soon we'll find a home for her where she can grow up and be safe," I told her.
"Don't worry babe, I'm sure we'll find one," Terry said, putting his arm around my shoulders.
The three of us sat there on the steps, watching Powder eat, knowing that this time we shared together was one that we will always cherish for the rest of our lives.
So will Uncle Tim be able to help them find a home for Powder? And what will Uncle Tim say when he finds out that his nephew is gay and has a boyfriend? Keep on sending me those comments.
