Holidays by the Sea
The last chapter ended:
The boys all felt a sense of pride when J gave them the responsibility as it showed that he did trust them and this camp was the first time that anyone had shown them this trust. Each of the boys also consciously decided that they would do what they could to make sure that this trust was not betrayed.
Chapter 158.
The three boys took their instruments and went over to Andrew's bed space to test them out. Neville started to connect the pieces of the flute together when Andrew said, "One problem. Got no power point here to plug into."
"Ok guys," Allan called out, "We need a power point. Can you look around you for one please?"
Allan then lifted the violin out of the case and fitted the movable bridge under the strings, before taking out the bow and tightening the gut on it. "Hey these guys know about looking after things. They even have the dobbin for the bow." He waxed the bow and then ran it over the strings. After a bit of a grimace, Allan began turning the keys to tighten the strings and tune the violin.
At the same time, Neville completed putting the flute together fitting the mouthpiece to the end of it and lifting that to his lips he began to blow. After a few scales to get his fingers used to the size and positioning of the holes he began to play the haunting melody of Beethoven's Ode to Joy.
"Hey! Yeah! I know that too. As soon as I get these strings in tune we can try together." Allan said.
"And if we find a power point I can join in too." Andrew told them.
"J's got one in his room for his bedside light." Daniel said.
Or you could use this one behind my locker." Thomas said, pulling his locker forward a bit so that they could get the plug into the socket.
Immediately Andrew picked up the keyboard and carried it over to Thomas' bed. He passed the plug to Thomas who leaned back and reached behind his locker to plug it in. Moments later Andrew was sitting cross legged on Thomas' bed playing the keyboard; trying different options out and running scales with each option to stretch his fingers which had not been on any keyboard for several days. After a bit of the exercises he began to play tunes instead of just scales and finally after several minutes he joined in with Neville as he began another round of Ode to Joy. With both the other instruments being played, Allan was finding it hard to tune the violin and so he took it down to the shower room and closing the door he sat down on the bench and continued with tightening and loosening the strings to get it in tune. Once he was satisfied and had run a few scales of his own to get his fingers limbered up, he went back out to join the other two. Neville took a break while Allan tuned the violin to the keyboard. The three musicians then played together for a bit, stopping and starting from time to time to make comments on what they needed to do to improve the sound. Their practice time got cut short as J called the dorm to get dressed and ready to go to dinner.
While they were at dinner, Spiro approached J and asked him to join him after dinner to discuss something. J said he would join Spiro in his office as soon as he had got his boys to their evening activity. As always, he was true to his word and shortly after the dinner hour had ended, J was knocking on Spiro's door.
"There are going to be too many of us for the office, so we will have our meeting in the leaders lounge." Spiro said, putting his hand on J's shoulder and gently turning him around to walk over to the lounge. There were another five dorm leaders and a couple of activity leaders in the lounge when J and Spiro entered. "Ah good! You are all here already, we can start without wasting any more time. Although, perhaps just a little more time might be acceptable." Spiro smiled at the group of people as he told them to order a drink each on him. When it came time for J to order his drink, he asked for a coke.
"You can have a beer if you want." Spiro told him.
"No thanks Spiro. The boys will smell it on my breath and they will not be happy that I have drunk underage when I am supposed to be setting them an example." J responded. A couple of the other dorm leaders looked at each other with raised eyebrows until they realised that J was genuine in his response and not just trying to make a point. Then they acknowledged to themselves that this might be one of the reasons J's dorm was the best behaved on camp. Yes! They had noticed it and it was not without a tinge of jealousy for some of them.
Once everyone was settled with their drinks, Spiro began, "I want to thank you for giving up some of your free time to help me with an idea I have. I will be talking to the other leaders as well before coming up with a plan and there might even be some more meetings or letters seeking ideas and suggestions before anything happens, if that is you all agree with the general idea. Most of you have been leaders on several camps and have had the dubious pleasure of working with all the age groups that attend these camps. I want to try and engender some team spirit and also some individual spirit amongst the campers to try and improve their times with us. For this I was thinking along the lines of introducing a camp competition. One that would see something along the lines of the best dormitory award being expanded to also include awards for the best campers. But I think we will need to have several categories of awards to give every camper and even chance at one of them. What do you think?" Spiro asked.
"I like the idea," Dean, one of the older leaders said, "But I think we need to spend a good bit of time working through what categories are set and how the campers will be assessed. After all one person cannot judge each and every camper in a particular award category by themselves. There are simply too many campers and some of the categories will require continuous assessment throughout the camp."
"I think that dorm leaders should not be allowed to assess their own dormitory as there is the chance that they will have a bias that makes it unfair." Lisa said. Lisa was about 23 and led one of the girl's dorms.
"While the dorm leader should not be in a position to give a complete assessment on his or charges, I think they should be allowed some input as they see the person as no other leader will get an opportunity to see them." J said.
"Who does the assessing will depend a lot on what sort of category is being assessed, but I think that there should always be more than one person to assess each camper in each category." Chris said. "For example, I don't have a dorm, but I see all the kids as they participate in sporting activities; so obviously I would be one of the judges for a sport based category, but as I don't know all the campers by name I would have to ask them all the time and try and make notes or mental notes. But I don't see all of the campers and neither do the other sports leaders. So each leader needs to assess several campers onto a short list and then someone else has to take that short list and look at what comments the sport leader in question has made and see if they can find a camper who stands out from the rest."
"I don't know about the costs of it, but each camper could be given a wrist bracelet with a number on it like the ones you get at theme parks." J suggested.
"How do you prevent the blighters from "accidentally losing" the bracelet.?" Carol asked. Drawing air quotation marks as she asked it.
"Tell them they have to have a bracelet around their wrists in order to eat in the dining room and to shop in the shop as well as for activities." J suggested.
"Wisdom beyond his years!" Dean complimented J for his answers.
"They could be called wrist band passports." J suggested again.
"Ok, I get the general impression that you all like the idea, but let's add a bit of meat to the bone and discuss what sort of categories we should be thinking about and how that particular category award will help to encourage and improve the campers and their experience while with us." Spiro, brought the meeting back into line. There was some good discussion and even some heated discussion when differences of opinion came to the fore. Spiro had been taking notes as the discussion moved between the different leaders.
"Shit look at the time. Our kids will be back at the dorm by now!" Dean suddenly exclaimed. The group had been so involved in the discussion they had lost track of the time and when Dean realised this it was a good twenty minutes after the evening activities should have ended.
"Ok ladies and gentlemen, we will have to end there for now. Please think about this some more and if you have anything you think will be good, let me know before the end of this camp. Thank you all for your time and input." Spiro brought the meeting to an abrupt stop as the dorm leaders got up and quickly left to get back to their dorms before their little angels destroyed the buildings.
J did not hurry back as much as the others did because he felt he could trust his boys and that they would be waiting for him, or might even be in the showers.
As J entered the dorm he realised that there was an air of excitement amongst the boys, but he could not quite place his finger on what it was. Most of the boys were still dressed, but a few of them had already removed some if not all of their clothes in anticipation of a shower. J did get a little suspicious that all was not what it seemed to be when the buzz died down as the boys became aware that he was in the dormitory.
Realising that J might hear something the boys did not really want him to hear yet, Ossie called out in a louder than needed voice, "Ah good job you are back J, now we can get our showers." And with that the buzz died down completely as all the boys turned and saw J and began to strip.
J now knew that there was definitely something up, but he had no idea what it was. However, he was not going to put a damper on things yet as he had sixteen boys all stripping in front of him and letting him see their bodies in their total glory. Nothing hidden, nothing covered up or made to seem what it was not. And Chuck was already boning up without trying to conceal it from J or anybody else in the dorm.
This night the boys got through with their showers quicker than they had yet this camp. They all remained naked as was usual by now while the three musicians struck up and played together. As they played a naked and very alluring Lawrence began to dance in a very sensuous way that had even some of the definitely straight boys chubbing just because they realised how sexy the movements were and this turned them on. As the last note faded and Lawrence came to a rest there was a tremendous round of applause and Mario called out, "That has got to be the tune and the dance. It will steal the show without anything else."
There was another round of applause and a lot of nodding heads as the boys in the dorm agreed with Mario.
"How is the song coming along?" J asked.
"Ah now, it is not a song anymore. It is an ode to joy." Andrew answered.
"Can I see it, please?" J asked.
"NO!" several boys called out together.
"You know I can insist on seeing it." J told them.
"We know, but we want you to trust us on this and let us try and do it all ourselves." Max told J.
"Well, that is one thing you have allowed me to do. I do trust you and trust you will remember what I said at the beginning of all this. The dorm leader has some input into the final night's bill." J said.
"And we will not betray your trust." Sean said. "But you have taught us to stand on our own two feet and that is what we are trying to do."
"Well guys, I hope so. You have only tomorrow to finish up what you are doing and be ready for after dinner tomorrow evening when you get to perform your secret ode." J reminded the boys that there was now less than twenty four hours to go to the final night concert.
I would really appreciate hearing about what you think is going to happen in concert and how it will all end. I have already worked out the gist of the ending, and would like to see how close some of you can guess me.
