I drove to bar I knew and went inside leaving JJ in the van. Inside I went up to the Bar and asked for a 6 pack of Bud. The dude laughed and said champ you need to come back in a few years. I smile and said please make it a cold 6 pack. Just then the owner came out laughing. Mike why are you fucking with the new guy? You know you need to see me. Well Joe, I've had a shitty couple of days and my Spring Break got fucked up and I had to come here. Mike, I heard about Charlie, he was a good guy. Then he looked at Pat and said, the dude is on Spring Break, pack him up 2 six packs and it's on me. Thanks Joe, I'll be in and out this weekend and this is really appreciated. Back in the van, I handed JJ the beer and headed for the cabin. I parked and jumped out and said,
JJ we need wood for the fireplace. JJ stopped and asked. mJ, I'm carrying the beer, what you doing? I laughed and said using the key so I can open the door. JJ said, well Chuck can bring in the wood, I'm drinking beer.
The beer was quickly put in the refrigerator and we each grabbed one and went outside and sat on the porch. We were talking about the day and JJ said, MJ I don't think I can get away from work to come back up here for the funeral. JJ, I understand and I'll take the single engine thing up here and do some real flying. The jet is great but the fucking thing almost flies itself. Mike, just remember in the jet you are flying is very fast and you are very high and a lot of shit can happen. If your bored get a more appropriate ride, like a car. I just laughed, JJ was either missing my point or was in teaching mode. Then again he could be fucking with me.
Just then Alice and Chuck appeared and Chuck was carrying a bag of groceries. I smiled and asked, so what's for dinner. Chuck laughed and said mom ordered food as she can't cook. We are having ribs and fries and beer mom is having a salad. JJ laughed and said little dude, MJ and I are having beer, your mom is having wine and you are having a soda or water. Alice laughed and said thanks JJ. Then JJ said Chuck, put the bag on the table and come with me and Jeep you jacket on. Chuck stood there looking at JJ then asked, where we going. JJ laughed and said you and I are getting wood, it will be cold here tonight. Chuck went inside and returned looking pissed off. JJ, got up and him and Chuck went outside. I heard JJ say say dude, you are lucky we don't have to split logs.
Once Alice and I were alone I looked at her and said Alice, this won't take a lot of my time. My job is to watch over the money and I have people who will do that. You son at some point in time will be very wealthy. It is not my job to help him grow and develop, that's for you. I will follow the terms of the Trust. I will talk with David if he actually shows up. He will undoubtedly be pissed off but this was all done correctly and my people looked over the trust and Craig has covered all the legal basis. Just then JJ and Chuck appeared and I asked if they had brought in enough wood. JJ got the message and looked at Chuck and said one more trip and let's see if you can carry more this time. Alice, Charlie didn't have much to say to his son as there was a lot of water that has passed under the bridge. Charlie did give David a two page letter. The letter basically reminded David that mom and dad had provided an excellent education. A private high school, an excellent college and a top law school. The reward for that was for David to pay very little attention to his parents. Charlie felt that he had done enough and little Charlie would get everything. Then he stressed that Chuck's education was David's responsibility. He needed to continue paying for the private school. Alice just sat there, then she asked Mike, how do you know all this? Alice, I don't know how much David read but he tossed the letter in the bushes out side Craig's office and I found it. Yes, I read it so that I would know what I am dealing with. When the letter got more personal, I stopped reading. I'll keep it safe and at the end of the Trust I'll share it with you and Chuck. Please understand the it is your responsibility to raise your son. By the way JJ is much better with Chuck than I am. Mike, will the letter upset Chuck? Alice, Chuck knows most of it and as you know Chuck, to put it nicely, doesn't respect his dad and David will have very little opportunity to deal with the kid. He understands, just doesn't respect his dad's life choices. Just then JJ and Chuck appeared caring a bunch of wood. Chuck said Mike, the food just arrived can you help with that. I looked at him and he smiled and said please. I returned the smile and said sure.
Turned out that Alice had paid for the food but I wasn't sure about the tip so I opened my wallet and handed the delivery kid, the guy my age, and handed him a 20. The dude smiled and said wow, are you serious or do you need change. I smiled, grabbed the bags and said, we're good, have a good night. He smiled and said thanks. The containers were open and plates were taken out of the cupboard and we all sat around the table. Dinner was a good time, considering the circumstances. Final, the table was cleared and the dishes were shoved in the dishwasher. Chuck seemed to simply vanish and Alice explained that most likely he was on the phone with his girl. JJ laughed and asked so how did that happen with him in an all boys high school? Alice said there is an all girls school a block away from his school. They spend a lot of time together and that is starting to worry me. I didn't mention the talk Chuck and I had. Alice had a third wine and JJ grabbed beers and handed me one. We finally lit a fire and just sat in the chairs and talked. About an hour later Chuck appeared and JJ asked, so Chuck how is the girl? Chuck said, good but missing me. We all laughed and chatted some but for the most part just watched the fire quietly. I checked my phone and there were no messages but I saw the old message from Erin and realized I hadn't thought about that. I decided to just get that Gradually filter through my head. What was weighing on me was dad. That letter Charlie wrote to David made me think about dad and our relationship.
Finally Alice said she was tired and she was going to take a shower and go to bed, she asked about the viewing and I said 1 to 4 and then 7 till 9. She went upstairs and I don't think she was halfway up the stairs when Chuck looked at JJ and asked can I please have one beer? JJ looked at me and I shrugged but JJ asked Chuck have beer before? Chuck laughed and said I'm a varsity starter in an all male school, what do you think? JJ smiled and said don't ever answer a question with a question with me, you sound like MJ. Chuck laughed and said yes, somehow it appears in a couple of guys room on a regular basis. I guess it's like how you guys got it. JJ said one and I mean it. Chuck said thanks and hurried to the refrigerator before one of us changed our minds. The way the kid downed the beer it was obvious that he had had some before. JJ then said he was tired and he went upstairs on our side of the cabin.
Chuck finished his beer and he looked at me and is laughed and said NO. Chuck laughed and said damn, you didn't even let me try. I just shook my head and Chuck returned to his seat and said Mike, when we going to chat about things? Well Chuck, I'm around all day tomorrow but JJ and I need to get home for Easter then I'm back for the day on Monday but going back home mid day Monday. Mike, how ant mom and I getting home? Chuck, if your mom doesn't have a plan I'll make your dad take you back. We have a jet here no but with JJ stuck at school and work I'll come back in a single engine craft so I won't have room for you and your mom. Chuck it's the best I can do. He looked at me and asked Mike, why did pap put you in charge of my trust? Well Chuck, He trusted me because I was fair in buying the Winery and treated him well and let him b a part owner and stay involved. Mike, why didn't pap get along with my dad? Chuck, I don't know. Chuck smiled and said Mike, I'm sure you do but no matter what you do please don't lie to me. Ok Chuck, your pap and grandma did a lot for your dad and your pap felt your dad abandoned him and his wife. I really don't know all the details. Chuck thought for a minute and said thanks. Mike, pap said you were a straight shooter, please don't play games with me. Look, I like JJ a lot and he manages me so you don't have to. JJ is the dude to have a beer with and hell I would drink with you but you are more serious than JJ. JJ is the fun older brother but you are the brother to go when the shit is about to hit the fan.
I took a deep breath and I said Chuck, you better get to one of us way before the shit hits the fan. There are terms in the Trust if you fuck up there is a charity that will be very happy. Look Chuck, pretty much you need to go to school stay away from drugs and don't get convicted of a felony. We need to have a long talk and I'll go over everything with you. Upstairs, I went into my room and found JJ freshly showered, laying on the bed nude. I smiled and quickly stripped and took a very quick, gym class shower and joined JJ in bed. As we ate Chuck lobbied for khakis and a dress shirt and JJ and I lobbied for him as that is all we had to wear. Alice, agreed and was glad for Chuck as this wasn't going to be an easy day for him. I was still in sweats so I grabbed a coffee and went out on the porch the trees were just string to bud and it was already warming up. I was quickly joined by Chuck. He had orange juice and he stood quietly beside me not wanting to interfere with my thoughts or so I thought. Turned out he wanted to know when we could talk. He wasn't pushy but I wanted to be a lone. Chuck, we can leave early and walk to the Winery and talk on the way. He said thanks and left me to return to my thoughts.
I don't know how long I was out there when JJ appeared and he handed me a fresh cup of coffee. I smiled and said thanks. JJ smiled and said MJ, what's up, you ok? JJ I'm fine and just want this over with. MJ, I know this is about your dad and from personal experience it is fixable. You scare the shit out of your dad for two reasons. First because you are so good at doing the things me can't, then because you are a lot alike because you are so driven. Then different in that your dad was driven by selling concepts and money. At first you were driven in school and football and with both that accomplished you moved to building shit. Like your dad you turned the company over to others. Unlike your dad you effectively manage things and oversee it all. MJ, if we weren't being watched I'd kiss you right now. JJ, thanks as that helped a lot. JJ left me to my thoughts and went inside. Fuck, I miss football and my teammates. I went back inside and went upstairs to shower.
JJ was nowhere to be found so I jumped into the shower, shaved and while doing that I decided that I needed to get a haircut and make an appointment with my head doctor. Then I tried to get dressed. I had very few choices and it turned out to be black jeans and a polo shirt and I decided on an Oakmont logo instead of a VT logo. Down stairs Chuck took one look at me and screamed mom, I'm over dresses. Her reply was loud and to the point saying Charles, one mor complaint nd you are putting on a suit. I smiled and said Chuck, let's go before you get in more trouble. We were quickly out the door and I saw JJ splitting wood. We stopped and he said he needed some exercise. Chuck remained quiet and I left him to his thoughts. We took the path that lead to the Winery. When we got to that special rock I stopped and said Chuck, have a seat. Chuck remained quiet but I asked him if his pap had taken him here? Mike, we came hear a lot as it was pap's favorite place and it became mine as well. Chuck, in a few day you will go back to school and nothing will be very different. The money in your trust will be there waiting for you. Classes, girls, friends will all come and go and you will find a good school to go to for college. Your mom will be there for you and help you manage all that. I'm not sure about your dad but try to me patient with him he is paying for you school and that won't change. I then went over the conditions in the Trust and reminded him that I had a responsibility to honor your pap's wishes. Chuck, neither JJ or I am able to manage your dad to day activities but we are alway here for you. I reached into my pocket and handed him my business card. He looked at it and I said dude, please turn it over. When he did he smiled as I had written both JJ's and my phone numbers. Chuck, make sure you call me before the shit hits the fan. Then Chuck said Mike, I need to find some paper and I'll give you my number. I smiled and said, just give it to me now and I'll remember but you will have to write it down for JJ. He gave me the number and we started off as he wanted to see his pap before anyone else got there.
It was a sad day but a lot of local people visited as Charlie was well liked and back in a day he played an important part in things around the area. JJ and I talked and decided that we would try to leave after dinner and get home before 9:00. He said that he would deal with the jet and have things ready. David appeared around 2:00 and I gave him time to get settled then around 3:30 I went up to him and asked for a chat. We went to the Winery store and into Jace's office. David immediately said that it wasn't personal but he was going to challenge the Trust. I smiled and said well David, you will have to fight Mr. Lee and my team of personal and corporate attorneys and when that's all done and you lose, I sue your fucking ass for legal fees. I didn't ask for this responsibility but as a favor to your dad I greed. Mr. Lee set up the trust and I had my team review it and it is sound and reflects the wished of your dad. So don't waste you time and money. You need to honor your divorce agreements and pay child support and schooling for Chuck. Oh, you should be careful where you discard your trash. I found this in the bushes outside Mr. Lee's office. With that I handed him the letter back. He looked at me and asked, so you have copies? I smiled and said have a nice day, I'll see you on Monday.
Jace was working the store and I asked for a ride to the airport and he tossed me a set of keys and said just take the van and leave it parked there till Monday as you will need it then. We shook hands and I thanks him. Back at the house, I found JJ and at 4:00 we found Chuck and Alice and told them I would be back Monday for the funeral. Chuck looked at me and asked Mike, what my number. I laughed and recited it. With that JJ and I drove to the airport. He checked to make sure the jet was refused and we did the usual checks and with him in the left seat we headed home.
Once I was at my place I dumped my bag and went to the house. I found Cole, Megan and dad finishing dinner and I put some coffee on and joined them for after dinner drinks. I was the only one drinking a non-alcoholic beverage. Megan was happy that I was home and we chatted about the events in New York. Cole disappeared to talk with his girl and Megan was putting Ashley down for the night. That left dad and I and I simply pointed to his office and said, let's talk. In the office dad immediately poured us a drink. Then he sat down, lit a cigarette pushed the pack to me and I shook my head indicating no. Mike, this is over due and I know the source of the issues is Adam and I'm sorry about that but we have been friends since college and he played an important part in the early stages of the company. Back in a day he was a fantastic lawyer very similar to how you and Tim interact. Mike, I owe him and yes I have paid him back more than enough. Mike, I love you and respect you and you are the most important person in my life. I hope you can understand that. Dad, I'm sorry we have moved in different directions. Dad looked surprise and said sure, if I can. Dad, I would like you to come with me to the funeral on Monday. It will be just you you nd me in the single engine airplane for 2 hours each way. Dad thought for a second or two and said sure Mike, that would be nice. I smiled and said wheels up at 6:00 AM. Dad laughed and said, sure I'm looking forward to it. With that I said goodnight to Megan and went to my place.
