Joey and Lucas (Chapter 4) by Aran

PRESENT (William's Point of View) "What did you get?"

"Well, nothing out of the ordinary, except he has two different sets of keys."

"Let me see them."

Mark, one of my "family" members, took a set of keys out of his pocket and held them out to me. Could this be what I've been looking for, what I haven't been able to get for two months now? I grabbed the keys from him and turned to one of the computers in my home office. I clicked the icon that said "Lucas' Place" and was presented with views from the different cameras in his apartment. I went to the doorway camera and scrolled back the time until I found what I was looking for. There before my eyes was an image of Ben taking Lucas' spare set of keys. I looked at the keys in my hand and found that they were identical. I couldn't believe my luck!

While Lucas was in France recording his album I had cameras installed all over his apartment, this way I can be close to my love, even if I wasn't physically there. Unfortunately, one of the guys who installed the camera system decided to help himself to Lucas' stereo system (I made sure he paid for that with his life, pretty expensive stereo in my opinion). When Lucas got back he had the locks changed and didn't give a copy to the Super, who had been my source before.

"These can be useful."

I checked the camera in the bedroom, but all I could see was a large lump under the blanket. I sighed, wishing that I could have seen his face. I turned the program off and turned towards Mark. Mark, unlike most of the other "family" members was white; he stood at 5'11" and had a beard and long black hair.

"We have to get him back to me."

"Um... I was wondering about that. Why is he so important."

"Because he knows too much. If he decided to he could send us all to jail, or blackmail us."

"Then why don't we just eliminate him?"

"NO!!!!!" I calmed myself down a bit "He's too rich and too public to disappear without any noise being made. We have to persuade him to join us."

I was lying. Lucas may be wealthy, but I think his family would be happy to be rid of him. After his father died his mother had to take him, but she couldn't stand him. It was quite a scandal nineteen years ago that a wealthy white woman had an affair with a middleclass black man. She and her family saw Lucas as a constant reminder of that indiscretion, and they were really happy when the father agreed to raise him with only monthly payments by the mother for childcare. But when he died Lucas had nowhere else to go, so she had to take him in.

Lucas also wasn't too public, nobody was too public to be killed, all we would have to do was make it look like a drug overdose. But I couldn't do that to my love. I couldn't stand hurting him. So he would have to join me in operating the largest organized crime in the city. My father, Sun Jin Cheng, is the big boss of the operation, and I'm going to inherit the operation from him when he retires. I don't care if the others accept him or not, so he isn't Chinese, so we're a gay couple, together we're going to bring organized crime into the 21st Century.

I knew all we had to do was get Ben out of the picture. He hated me and I'm sure that he's the one polluting Lucas' mind with negative thoughts about me. Also, we first got together when Ben was out of the picture, maybe that's all that needs to be done this time, only it should be permanent.

"What condition was Ben in when you left?"

"He was pretty bad. Hong threw him down the stairs."

"Was he still alive?"

"Yeah, I'm pretty sure."

"Fine, I'll have to take care of him later."

MEANWHILE (Lance's Point of View)

Ugh! I can't sleep with Chris snoring so loud, he sounds like a chainsaw when he sleeps, I'll never understand how Joey could sleep with him in the same room. Joey snores too, but his is much softer, it helps put you to sleep rather than wake you up. DAMN! I was trying not to think about Joey, about what he said, or about the other guy's reaction. I think they hate him now, but I could never hate Joey, I love him. It took me a long time to come to terms with the fact that I was in love with another man, or that I liked other men at all. The way I was raised, and my religious beliefs don't exactly approve of homosexuality, but since I've never done anything I guess I won't go to hell. I've wanted to do stuff but I was always too scared of getting caught by the other guys, and judging by their reaction to Joey's news I was right to be scared.

I have to talk to Joey; maybe we can get together now that I know that he's gay. I'd definitely do stuff with him, it can't be hell if Joey's there. I always thought that I was doomed to love a straight man, but now there's a possibility that we can get together. I would love that so much! I'll help him face the group, they can't throw us both out. Maybe it'll help them to deal with it if he doesn't start dating guys they don't know. I just know that I have to talk to him.

I slip slowly and quietly out of the bed and start tiptoeing towards the door, trying my best not to wake Chris up. Then I realized something: I could be leading a parade threw the room and he wouldn't hear it through his snoring. I left the room and slipped threw the living room of the suite to his room and slowly opened the door. I looked in expecting him to be asleep in his bed, all I saw was an empty unmade bed, with a made bed right beside it. Where is he? I checked everywhere. I looked in the bathroom and in the closet. Then I got desperate and checked the drawers. Well, he wasn't in them, but his stuff was which meant that he probably wasn't that far gone.

I looked out the window and sighed. I hope he's ok. I was scared for him. He was out there in the city by himself. I knew he could take care of himself, but the city is filled with crazy people, and murderers, and... and... I can't think about this. I was starting to cry at the thought of something bad happening to him. I was also starting to feel tired; now that the human chainsaw wasn't keeping me up I might be able to get some sleep. I slipped into Joey's bed, god the pillow smells like him, and fell asleep, waiting for Joey to get back.

A LITTLE LATER (JC's Point of View)

All I want to do is fall asleep. That's normally not a problem for me; hell I can sleep through Chris' snoring like nothing. But the only thing keeping me up tonight is my conscience. I was feeling guilty about what I said to Joey earlier. Jeez, I basically called him a freak, abnormal. I was only trying to help the situation. Why did Chris have to blow up like that? I have nothing against gay people, and it might be interesting to be friends with one. I guess Chris doesn't see it that way; we'll have to work on that in the morning. But right now I have to go talk to Joey, to make sure he knows that I don't think he's a freak, and that I still love him (as a brother).

I don't even bother trying to sneak out of the room, Justin could sleep though the end of the world. As I head towards Joey's room I could hear Chris snoring, the door to his and Lance's room was open a crack. I opened the door to Joey's room and saw someone sleeping in his bed. I knew it couldn't be him because I couldn't hear him snoring, even though it's nowhere near as loud as Chris I'd be able to hear it from here. I snuck towards the bed and put my hand on the person in the bed. Lance shot up and inhaled sharply, I guess I scared him, but...

"What are you doing in Joey's bed?"

Lance's eyes got really big and he started shaking, why was he so scared?

"Um... uh... JC I couldn't hate him and..."

"Oh, you came to apologize, that makes two of us."

Lance visibly relaxed as I said that, I guess he was scared that he was the only one who didn't mind Joey being gay.

"Yeah, but when I got here he was gone, I guess I fell asleep waiting for him."

"How long ago did you get here?"

We both looked over at the clock on the nightstand and saw that it was almost 5:30am.

"About 45 minutes."

"Where could he be?"

Lance looked like he was going to flip out when I said that.

"Oh god JC, what if something happened to him, it's all our faults!"

"Calm down Lance, I'm sure he's fine, he's a big guy he can take care of himself. Besides, he probably knows some people in New York since he's from around here, he's probably staying with one of them tonight."

That seemed to calm Lance down a bit; I just hope it's true. I couldn't live with myself if something happened to Joey because of what I said tonight.

A FEW HOURS LATER (Lucas' Point of View)

When I woke up I was aware of three things. One, my phone was ringing. Two, there was someone else in bed with me. Three, my neck was wet. I looked up just in time to see a drop of drool fall from Joey's mouth. Seeing him I remembered what happened last night/this morning, and now I knew why my neck was wet. Now I had to get my phone to stop ringing. I managed to reach the phone on the end table without waking Joey up. I hit the on button.

"Hello?"

"Hello, is there a Mr. Lucas Raymond at this number?"

"Who's calling?"

"This is Dr. Rodriguez from Bellevue Hospital. Are you Mr. Raymond?"

"Yes. How can I help you?"

"I have you listed as the local emergency contact number for a Mr. Ben Chesterfield. Do you know him?"

"Yes, what's happened?"

I was starting to tremble. I think I woke Joey up because he wrapped his arms around me tighter.

"Mr. Chesterfield was brought into the emergency room about two hours ago after he interrupted a robbery attempt at his apartment."

"Is he ok?"

I was barely able to get that out, I don't think I've ever been this scared in my entire life.

"He should be fine, he has a minor concussion and some broken ribs, but he'll be alright."

I slowly released the breath that I'd been holding since I heard who the caller was.

"Ok, I'll be down there as soon as I can."

I hit the end button and just lay there, absorbing what I'd just heard.

"Is everything ok?"

"Um... not really. My friend is in the hospital, he walked in on some people robbing his place."

"Is he going be a alright?"

"They said he would, I better get down there."

"I'll go with you."

"Thanks. Um... why don't you go take a shower and I'll see if I can find you something to wear."

He nodded. Then he slowly slipped out of the bed. About that time I lost all my mental faculties and was reduced to a staring, drooling fool. He was SO hot! The only thing he was wearing were Superman boxers, I had to suppress a giggle when I saw them, and a wife-beater that allowed me to get a look at his strong arms. Jeez, I'm lucky he didn't crush me last night with those strong arms. I came to my senses as I heard the shower start.

Then I was faced with a problem, what the hell did I have that would fit Joey. I'm at least 3 inches shorter than him, and I have a smaller bone structure and slimmer build. Luckily I new someone on my floor who was about Joey's size, and he'd be home cause he's a freelance writer. I threw on my robe and dashed down the hall to his apartment. I knocked on his door and prayed that he'd be home.

"Hey Lucas, lock yourself out?"

"No. Um... can I borrow some clothes, just one outfit will be fine."

"(LOL) What's wrong with your clothes?"

"Well, you see it's not really for me, it's for... a friend."

"(LOL) A friend? Is he cute?"

"I thought you were straight Jason."

"I am, but I can't let just anybody be seen in my clothes."

"You shop at The Gap Jason, everyone in the entire city has your clothes."

"Good point."

He disappeared for a minute, and then he came back with a pair of jeans, a T-shirt, and a striped button-down shirt. When everything was in my arms he placed a new pair of boxers and a new pair of socks on top of the pile.

"He can keep those."

"I hope so." We both laughed "Well thanks for the clothes, this is a pretty nice outfit."

As I headed towards my door I added "for a straight guy" under my breath.

"I heard that!"

He laughed and closed his door. When I got back to my room I saw Joey standing in the middle of my room wearing just a towel, looking at all the family pictures I had out. I tossed the stuff on the bed.

"I managed to get you something to wear, he said you could keep the boxers. I'm going to take a shower now."

"Ok, thanks."

I managed to get showered and dressed in only half an hour, I think that's a record for me. When I walked out of my room I saw Joey going threw my kitchen.

"Do you have anything to eat?"

"Sorry, I was supposed to do that today. We can stop on the way and get something."

I went into a Starbucks around the corner from my place while Joey tried to hail a cab. I got out just as one pulled over. We got in and I handed him a coffee and a scone as I told the driver where to go. We glanced at each other and he arched his eyebrow and held up the scone.

"Who's the.... Um, oh yeah, who's The Stone now?"

I don't think I've ever heard anyone laugh so hard for so long. I just sat there as he laughed for about two blocks worth of very slow moving rush hour traffic. I tried to ignore him and eat my scone and look at the window, but he was laughing pretty hard, and I got the feeling that it was at me. That is the guy's name isn't it?

"I guess I messed that one up, huh?"

I tried to joke, but I could tell my voice betrayed the embarrassment that I was feeling. I looked away again. Then I felt a hand on my shoulder, I hadn't noticed that he stopped laughing as soon as I said that.

"I'm sorry."

"What was so funny?"

"Well, it's The Rock, not The Stone."

"Oh."

I turned red with embarrassment as I turned towards the window. For some reason I couldn't bring myself to look at him. I was so embarrassed by my mistake that I wanted to leap out of the cab into traffic.

"Look at me."

I couldn't do it. I don't know why, I usually don't embarrass easily. I just sat there looking out the window as the cab headed downtown. Then I felt him grab my hand and pull it towards him. Then he kissed it, I was feeling much better.
