Writer's note: The first part was a mixture of first and third person telling. It's sort of confusing when I went back and reread it. So, I have decided to just use first person, like Josh is telling the story. Hope that you like this angle...=)
On with our story....
"Well, I do like you and would like to see where things go. How about that?", Kevin responded.
"I like that a lot. Ok, let's go or we'll never get there before the dinner rush." I said flipping my keys in my hand as I walked toward the door.
"Just so you know. I plan on buying you dinner tonight." Kevin said as we stepped out of the elevator.
"Yeah, yeah, yeah. We'll see who grabs the check the quickest." I laughed.
The ride to the restaurant was kind of quiet. I am a bit shy and get flustered around cute guys. Especially cute guys that like me. So, we spent most of the time listening to the radio and I pointed out the occasional landmark or interesting building.
We arrived at the restaurant about 6:30. Just in time to beat the rush. "Cool. We made it just in time." I said, from our table in the back corner, looking at the crowd forming at the front door.
"It's probably because we were doing 90 down the freeway." Kevin laughed.
"Ok...it's a bad habit. But everyone drives like that here. Sorry that I didn't drive like the old folks in Florida." I said, sticking my tongue out playfully.
"I have a rule about that you know." Kevin said as his eyes looked from my tongue up to my eyes. "A rule about what?" I asked.
"About sticking your tongue out. Don't stick it out unless you're gonna use it," he replied, staring directly into my eyes.
I turned beet red and looked down. "Oh, ok." I said into my menu.
Kevin started to say something when our waitress came over. She asked if we had ever been there before and I said that I had and Kevin said yes too for some reason. I said, "He's lying. Give him the run down."
He kinda glared at me and smiled. She explained how to cook the food with the skewers and all and what foods not to cook together. He listened as intently as he could while glancing at me. I knew that he hated me now. Ten minutes later, she took our order and left to get our drinks. "I hate you now." He said as she walked away.
"I know. Oh come on. She gets paid to do that speech and I wanted you to enjoy the full effect of this place. Besides, you might have cooked your shrimp too long and your chicken too short." I said laughing. He laughed. Poking me in the arm with a skewer.
It was then that I thought that I could really like this guy. He has everything going for him. Not like the losers that I usually went out with. I swear that I am a psycho magnet. They seem to flock to me. It's kind of scary.
"And then I rode the magic broom all the way into Wonderland." Kevin said. It registered what he said and I realized that I had been day dreaming. "Did you click your heels too Dorothy?" I responded, trying to sound like I had been listening the entire time.
"Just seeing if you were listening to me," He said.
"So what do you think of my plan?" he asked.
"Sounds good to me," I replied. God, I really hadn't heard a damn thing that he said. I was off in my own little word. I need to quit daydreaming. Damn it, I am doing it again.
"Ha! You weren't listening. Caught you," Kevin said.
"Sorry, I was off in my own little world. But, it was because of you at least that I was day dreaming. If that's any consolation." I said, trying to explain.
"It's okay. We all do it," he said. "So what were you thinking?" he questioned.
"Just about how normal you seem. I usually get the weirdoes after me. It's like a have Lithium in my pocket or something." I replied.
He laughed and told me that this is the first "date" (doing the little quote marks with his fingers. God that was cute!) that he has been on in a long time.
"Why me?" I asked.
"I have this thing about being able to read people. You looked me straight in the eye when we first met and I saw something there. Call it premonition, call it fate, call it whatever. I knew that I had to spend some time with you. Even if it's just for the week that I'm here. I just knew that you'd be fun," he explained.
"WoW. I just figured that you were bored and didn't feel like doing the same old things with the guys." I said.
"We do get on each other's nerves sometimes. It's like having 4 brothers there constantly. Of course we're going to annoy each other. But, I love them all to death. I cannot imagine living my life without them in it" he confided.
"But, I am here because I wanted to meet you and get to know you some," he continued.
"Besides, who can resist that smile," he added.
The waitress brought us out our meals and refills for our drinks.
I blushed for the next 10 minutes I think. "Please, you're embarrassing me. Besides, you're the one with the eyes that someone can get lost in." I said.
"Ok, we could go on like this trading compliments. But I am hungry," he said skewering a piece of chicken and some broccoli and placing it in the fondue pot to cook.
"Besides, I want to hear all about you. You already know too much about me from the press I think," he added.
"I'm not good at talking about myself. I never know what to say." I said thinking about what he would like to know.
"Tell me something interesting, something that you like to do. Family? Hobbies? Ambitions? Sports? Anything. I want to hear it all," Kevin stated quickly.
"Well, I am the youngest of three. One of each. Both older. I'm the baby," I replied.
He just rolled his eyes and smiled. "I should've known. How old are you?" he questioned.
"20 something", I replied. "Tell me...sheesh", he added.
"27." I said finally.
"Ugh, you're old" he laughed.
"You take that back." I said, throwing some ice cubes at him.
"Ok. Ok. I take it back," he replied, ducking from the ice cubes.
"Besides. You're a cute 27", he said.
Once again, as if on cue, I blushed. "Stop. Or else I'm not going to have any blood left in my body. It's all going to be in my face." I laughed.
"Do you work at the garage full time?" he questioned.
"I only do that to help out my uncle and make some money to buy film. I'm really a photographer and an amateur filmmaker. You'd be surprised how much film is these days." I continued on about taking pictures of people and buildings around town for my senior project. Kevin seemed like he was in a daydream. It was my turn to catch him.
"And then he got naked and I took pictures of him right there in the church. The priest was none too happy, I'll tell you", I said, hoping to catch him off guard.
All the while I was talking Kevin was thinking about his conversation with the guys a couple of weeks before.
"I think that we should do it. It'll be a blast. Besides, the fans will LOVE it." Brian said.
"That would be so cool. But they wouldn't do it while I was showering or anything. Right?" Nick asked as he looked around the group.
"No one's going to see that little baby smooth butt. You chicken." AJ responded.
"How would you know it's smooth?" Nick asked him.
"Let's just say you're a heavy sleeper." AJ added.
"Perv", Nick said.
They all laughed, knowing they were joking with each other.
"Like I wanna touch your ass!" AJ said.
"You'd be so lucky" Nick shot back.
"Umm, guys, can we maybe get back to why were here. Are we doing this or what?" Kevin said, looking around that the other 4.
"Cool with me", Brian said.
"Awesome", was Nick's only comment.
"It sounds like fun", Howie threw in.
"Anything for the fans," was AJ's answer.
"Cool. I say we do it. This behind the scenes video is gonna blow the others out of the water. We can start looking after the Detroit show. We have a week off then, " Kevin added.
"Earth to Kevin. Earth to Kevin." I said, grabbing his arm.
Kevin finally snapped out of it and said, "Have you got any time off soon?"
"My uncle runs the place. What do you think? Why?" I questioned.
"We want to make a behind the scenes, all out in the open, (so to speak), documentary of our time in North America. Just to give the fans some idea of what it is that we do and what our daily life if like." Kevin explained.
"And, when you just said that you were a filmmaker", he continued, "I thought that maybe you'd like to audition for us. Show us some stuff and all."
"You're joking right. Ha. Ha. Playing a funny on me, I get it." I said.
"No, I am 100% not joking. I am serious," he said.
"Ahh." I screamed.
A little too loudly I think, I scared the waitress into coming over and asking if everything was okay.
"Yes, sorry. Just some excellent news." I responded.
"By the way, would you mind signing this menu Kevin. I'd shoot myself if I didn't at least ask you." She said, handing him a menu.
"I would love to. And thank you, thank you, for not screaming my name or anything. It's the fans like you that really make me love my job some days." He replied, signing the menu.
"Anything special you would like written" he said to the waitress.
"Surprise me", she answered, kneeling by the table to watch him write.
"To Holly, with hugs and kisses. Love, Kevin", I read as he wrote.
He then leaned over and kissed her cheek. She squealed and walked away.
That was the second moment I realized that there was something very, very special about this man. I knew it was his "job" and all, but he really seemed to enjoy and more over, appreciate his fans.
"You love that don't you?" I asked him.
"I look at it this way. I am just an entertainer. But, I can't entertain without people. What I give to them with that little signature and peck on the cheek is so inconsequential to what they give me. I get so much love from my fans it is sometimes overwhelming. I sit back some days and just think about everything that has happened to me. Everything that I have, everything that I am, is all because of them. So, I do what I can. I give what I can. In hopes of somehow trying to repay them." He said.
I just sat there and realized that everything that he just said came from his heart. That this man sitting before me didn't let stardom go to his head.
We finished dinner just chatting about this, that and the other. I suddenly lost my shyness. I was talking about things that I had never mentioned to anyone else. My dreams. My hopes. My fears.
I could see the waitress starting to walk over with the check since I was facing her direction and just before she got to the table, made a quick comment about the painting hanging above us on the wall. We both looked up as he reached over and grabbed the check that the waitress sat down.
"You're sly. But not that sly", he said.
"You're sneaky. I like that." I replied.
Taking his wallet out, he placed some money on the table and we got up and left.
"What now?" I asked.
"I was reading some brochures about the new casino opening here. I kind of wanted to go but I am afraid that I would get swarmed on by fans", he said.
"Well, we can always..." I started.
End of Part 2. As always, comments are appreciated. Hope that you enjoyed this.
