Mr. Black Sings

A Sad Song 2

Chapter Four

Interlude; The Darkest Day

Part One

“NO!” I screamed, waking myself up from the dream. Ever since the conversation I had with Tyler I keep having nightmares. These are bad nightmares. In every one of them Brady gets hurt. I don't know where they come from, but every morning I find myself calling Brady just to make sure he's alright.

I picked up my cell phone and I dialed Brady's. It only rang once before his groggy voice greeted me. “You need to stop calling me this early,” he said. “Dude, it's five in the morning. Some of us like to sleep ‘till at least six.”

“I'm sorry Brady,” I said. “I had another dream, and I just wanted to make sure you were alright.”

“I am alright. Can I get back to sleep now?”

“Yeah, alright. Do you want me to pick you up today?” I asked.

“Sure, sure, I'll see ya later,” he said before he hung up.

My sister Lisa walked into my room. She had paint all over her clothes. She looked at me with a worried expression. “What's up?” I asked, as she approached my bed.

“Nothing. I just heard you talking from the bathroom,” she said. She sat on my bed next to me. I quickly pushed her off.

“You’re going to get paint all over the sheets,” I said.

“Oops. Sorry,” she said, and took the chair next to my bed. She looked at me for a little bit. She didn't say anything.

“Did you want to talk to me about something?” I asked her.

“Well, I wanted to know if you were alright. Look, I know I haven’t been around because of my gallery show,” she said, as my brother Tim walked into the room.

“Well, we’re both kind of worried about you,” Tim said, sitting next to me.

“What is this, the Black family reunion?” I asked. “Don't you people have better places to be than in my room at five in the morning?”

Lisa looked at Tim. Tim frowned. “We just want to make sure you were dealing alright with mom and dad. We know they can be a hand full,” said Tim.

They were right. My parents had suddenly turned into my worst nightmare. I was grounded all of the time these days. I had to literally beg just to be able to drive to school, and this was only when they remembered that I did exist.

“Guys, I'm alright. Can we just drop this? Thanks for being there,” I said as I got out of bed and headed towards the bathroom. I could feel their eyes burning a hole in my back. “Tim, Lisa, maybe we can talk about this tonight. I really can't talk about this right now, alright?”

“Sure, but I am holding you to that,” Lisa said, approaching me. She gave me a hug and kissed my cheek. “I'm going to go paint. I'll see ya tonight.”

“I'll see ya later,” Tim said, and patted my back as he left my room.

Half an hour later, I was showered, changed, and ready to go. The problem was that, at five thirty in the morning, there was nowhere to go. My father greeted me as I walked out of my room.

“You're up early,” he said, looking at his watch. “Way early.”

“I had a bad dream,” I said. He looked at me for a moment and then put his arm around me.

“Do you remember what we used to do when you had a bad dream?” he asked. “We used to go to breakfast. Why don't I treat you to breakfast today before you go to school?”

“No dad, you used to take Tim to breakfast. You never did that with me,” I said, and headed down the stairs.

“Brian!” my father called out. I kept on walking. I hated to be reminded about how many things I had missed out on when I was younger. They’re trying to make up for ignoring me most of my life, when all I want is for them to stop treating me like I am still that kid they forgot at the mall three years ago. I mean, he even forgot that it was Tim who he'd taken for breakfast.

I was almost out to the Garage when I felt his hand on my shoulder. “Brian, look, I'm sorry, alright?” my father said.

“It's alright dad, I'm just going to go,” I said. He gave me a frown but left it at that.

I drove to Maybury. I knew someone who would definitely be up this early. Drew smiled at me when he walked out of the hospital. “Hey, what are you doing up this early?” he asked me as he got into my car. I smiled and leaned over for a kiss. He kissed me back. I cupped the back of his head.

I still didn't know where he and I stood, but I knew we had something special. He had said he likes me on numerous occasions, and I certainly know that I want more. That is why I had to stop.

“Drew, I. . . ” I tried to say but he cut me off with another kiss.

“You and I are together,” he said, planting another kiss on me. “I mean I want us to be together.”

“I sure do hope so,” I told him before I climbed on top of him. He smiled but pushed me back off.

“Good, but I need to get back to work and these scrubs aren't going to hide my hard on,” he said. I pouted and he kissed me. “I have tonight off. Call me.”

“Try and stop me,” I said

Joseph sat at Steve’s desk looking over some of the English Department’s lessons. He really didn't want to do it, but it was his best chance. He had to request Brady's help that afternoon and he was looking forward to it. Yet, he had to be careful. This day had to be the last day he'd spend here, and after that he had to disappear, and so did Brady. Steve would be his greatest problem. He couldn't let Steve find him.

Brady walked into the room looking for Steve. “Have you seen Steve?” he asked. “One of the donors is here and he wants to meet with him.”

The Shaw School was funded by private donations, with some help from government grants. Steve had to fight hard to get what he needed. Every little thing helped.

“Steve stepped out for a minute,” Joseph said. “I think he went to the art room.”

“Oh alright, see ya later,” Brady said.

“Wait Brady; I need your help tonight. I need to bring some stuff from my house, and Steve said that you could help me,” Joseph said. Brady thought on it for a moment and nodded.

“I am meeting Brian today, but we can meet you at your house,” Brady said.

“That would be perfect,” Joseph said with a big smile.

A man walked into Officer Grant's office. The man placed a folder in front of him and Officer Grant looked at it. “We had another one, late last night,” the man said. “We have a witness this time.”

Officer Grant quickly stood, grabbing the folder before leaving his office. He looked at his partner. “Jim, how bad is it?”

“The boy was pronounced dead at the scene,” Jim said. “Andy, look, I know we keep telling ourselves that we'll get him before he gets the next one, but we can't ever be sure, you know. These things happen. This time is different; we have a license plate number.”

Officer Grant looked at the file. Right then and there he knew who it was. It was Joseph Bean, a sex offender. He was living in the area illegally. He hadn't registered as a sex offender in Maybury, even though he had been living in the city for years after he was released.

“This is bad; we need to move on this as quickly as possible,” officer grant said.

“Were moving in on his house now” Jim said.

“Good. But I know where he really is,” Officer Grant said, walking out of the building. When he was by his car he picked up the phone and dialed the Shaw school. “Steve, hey Listen have you seen Brady?”

“No he just left with Brian. They went to help Joseph bring some stuff for the school from Joseph's house,” Steve said. “Why is there anything wrong.”

Officer grant froze, not really knowing how to answer that. “Steve we might have a problem. I need you to be calm. We have a bad situation that we need to deal with.”

“Andy, tell me what's going on. Are they in trouble, because you're freaking me out,” Steve said.

“Steve, Joseph Bean is a sex offender. We have reason to believe that he has been killing some of the street kids,” officer grant said.

Steve didn't answer. A minute later the line went dead. Steve was running out of The Shaw School towards his car. Officer Grant got into his car and headed towards Joseph bean's home.

Dude where are we? I asked Brady as we pulled up behind Joseph. We had driven an hour out of Maybury. We were at some secluded house. I was definitely freaked out.

“I don't know, but I was thinking about what you said the other day about him,” Brady started to say, when Joseph came out with big cups of lemonade.

“Hey guys, I wanted to thank you for helping me out. I'm not as young as I used to be, you know,” Joseph said handing each of us a cup. “I figured you guys would like a drink before we got started.” We both took the drinks and sipped at them as he motioned for us to follow him to the garage. “I need you guys to help me take out some of these boxes. Steve needs them for the school.”

We got to work and started taking out boxes one by one. At some point I started to feel real tired. I looked at Brady and he looked real weak. “Are you alright?” he asked me. I quickly looked at the empty lemonade cups and then turned to Joseph. What I saw next made my heart stop. The big white car. I know that car.

Brady had fallen and he looked like he was sleeping. Next thing I know my eyes are closing by themselves and Jacob is approaching me. “Such a beautiful boy,” he said as he picked me up. I felt him carrying me. Then I felt myself falling. I landed on something soft as I fell asleep.

Steve drove as fast as he could to Joseph's apartment. By the time he reached it the Maybury police were there. He quickly pulled over and got out of his car. Officer Grant walked over to Steve. “Where are they?” Steve asked.

“They're not here, Steve,” Officer Grant said. “We were hoping that you could help us with that.”

“How can I help?”

“Do you know if Joseph has other property?” officer Grant asked, as his partner Jim walked over. Steve started to think. He had heard of a house Joseph had inherited from his parents when they used to work together, during the first years of the Shaw School.

“The license plate is a dud,” Jim said.

“Shit,” officer Grant said. “That was our best lead.” He then explained to Steve.

“What kind of car was it?” Steve asked Jim.

“I can't share that Mr...” Jim said.

“Call me Steve.” Jim nodded. “I just want to help you. Look, I know that he used to own a house about an hour away. I don't know if he still owns it.”

“I'll get right on that,” Jim said and walked away.

“What about the car,” Steve asked Officer Grant.

“The car was a white Lincoln,” officer grant said.

Steve stopped moving. “Joseph is the man that nearly killed Brady?” Steve asked.

“He might have been the man that kidnapped Brian,” Officer Grant said. “We need to tell the Blacks.”

“I'll tell my sister. You just find them,” Steve said, walking away. Suddenly he knew how far he had to go and what he needed to do.

“I am still his mother,” Sharon Black said to her husband, Daniel. “I said he's grounded and that is the end of the story. I said that he had to be home by three today. All I ask is that, if he's going to stay out late, he should call us!”

“Sharon, all I am saying as that sometimes we need to cut him a little slack. He's had it worse than any of our children. He does well in school, and does everything he's told to do, within reason. That kid provoked him He even apologized to him. What else do you want from him?”

“I just want him to keep out of trouble. Look, I know he's had it rough, and that it is our fault, but his temper needs to be kept under control,” Sharon said. “Sometimes I fear that he's going to burst and kill someone.”

“I trust Brian. He has a very good head on his shoulder,” Daniel said as he stepped closer to his wife. “Look, Jenny told us that he tried to walk away. That boy called out to him. Brian is only human. Look, at least ease up his curfew.”

“Alright, I'll ease up on him,” Sharon said.

“Do you know what happened this morning? I confused him for Tim again,” Daniel said.

“Ah, that is where this is all coming from,” Sharon said, putting her arm around her husband's back.

“You should have seen him, Sharon, it's like I broke his heart,” Daniel said.

“Last week I forgot to set a place for him at dinner. Luckily, Lorraine remembered and brought out a plate. Daniel, when did we become this bad? I remember almost everything we did with Lisa and Tim, but I can't remember doing anything special with him.”

“Me either, and I try Sharon. Just when I think that I remember something, I find out that it's one of the other kids. I feel so guilty.”

“Me too, but we are his parents, and we have to set boundaries. It's the only way I know what is going on with him. It's like he just sleeps here. Otherwise he's out with his friends. I hear everything from Steve.” “I mean, did you know that Drew and he are dating?”

“Lisa told me that they were just friends,” Daniel replied.

“See? That is what I mean,” Sharon said. “We don't hear anything from him. He shuts us out. I don't want him to shut us out. I want to be there for him, Daniel. How can I, when he trusts Steve more than us.”

Daniel thought about what his wife said. She had a point. Brian barely talked to them and, when he did, he gave them vague answers. “It's like we have a stranger in our home,” he said as the door bell rang.

“I'll get it,” Sharon said, walking out of the kitchen.

“Daniel! Daniel!,” Sharon screamed. Daniel ran out of the kitchen as soon and as fast as he could.

“What happened?” Daniel asked Steve, as he reached his wife. Steve gave them a worried look.

“Brian and Brady, they uh . . ., they're missing,” Steve said. “I need you to come with me Daniel.”

Brady woke up on a bed, face down. His clothes were gone and his arms and legs were tied to the corners of the four poster bed. “I thought for sure you were dead that night I left you in the snow,” Joseph said, from somewhere behind.

“Let me go,” Brady said.

“Why? After all of the trouble it took to get you here? I think not,” Joseph said, stepping closer. He inched even closer and placed his hand on Brady's leg. “I can't; not when I have you here. You're special Brady. You're still alive.”

Brady tried to break himself loose. He pulled hard, trying to get his hands free. “Let me go, you sick fuck!” Brady yelled.

Josephs hand traced upwards to Brady's thigh. “You are perfect. Do you know that?”

Brady tried harder to break free, but Joseph had already stepped onto the bed. “No, you sick fuck! No, no, don't do this.” Brady cried out.

“Dude, you alright?” someone asked me. The voice was young, maybe twelve or thirteen years old. I looked around in the darkness toward where the voice was coming from. “He hasn't brought anyone in a while.”

“Who are you?” I asked the kid.

“My name is James,” the kid said.

“Where are we?” I asked, trying to get up off the floor. I looked around, but I couldn't see anything. I could only move few feet because of the chains around my arms.

“We're in the basement, best I can tell,” the kid said to me as I realized where I was. It was the basement where that man took me three years before. I remembered it because of the smell.

“I've been here before,” I said.

“Do you remember how you got out?” the boy asked.

“I didn't get out. He beat me close to death and dropped my body in some dumpster. He thought I was dead,” I told him. “How long have you been here?”

“I think I've been here for at least a week,” The boy said. “My brother and I were out walking, trying to get tricks, and he picked us both up. He promised us a hundred each if we went back home with him. He threw me in here and kept my brother up stairs.”

“He must have taken my friend too,” I said.

“He killed my brother last night,” the boy said.

“What?” I asked.

“I heard him scream last night, and then I heard a gunshot,” the boy said. “He didn't scream anymore after that.”

This is when I started to panic. I didn't know how long I had been there, and I needed to save Brady. “Dude we need to get out of here,” I said.

Steve tore out of Lakeside with his brother in law in the passenger seat. “This is all my fault,” Steve said to Daniel.

Daniel didn't respond. He looked out of the window impatiently. “How can this happen to us again?” he asked Steve. “My son, I mean our sons, Steve. What did they do to deserve this?”

“I don't know, Daniel. All I know is that we need to get to them before Joseph can do anything serious,” Steve said. “I've seen what that man can do.”

“Steve how.. . do you know?” Daniel asked.

“There have been a series of rapes and murders downtown,” Steve said. “Some have escaped, others weren’t that lucky. The person doing this has been killing some of the street kids after he rapes them.”

“But why hasn't this been on the news?” Daniel asked. “ I haven't even seen it in the newspapers.”

“It's not something that the city is particularly proud of. I work with the city to help those that have survived. It's the least I can do,” Steve said.

“This is what happened to Brady isn't it?” Daniel asked.

“I believe so,” Steve said. “It just never occurred to me that Joseph could be the man behind this.”

“Steve, don't beat yourself up over this,” Daniel said. “We need to focus on getting our sons back safe. Where is this house?”

It's about an hour out of Maybury,” Steve said. “Joseph's father left it to him in his will. Look, I didn't tell Officer Grant about the house yet. I need to do this without them.”

“I understand,” Daniel said. “I understand more than you know.” For the next hour they drove in silence...
