Steve opened his eyes slowly, unable to tell what he was looking at. He scrubbed at his eyes, checking to see if his hellish contacts had made the night. When he leaned up and looked around, he saw that it was sometime in the late afternoon, and he was in the middle of a field in the park.....still. Whatever the hell happened last night, he thought, I sure should've held back a bit. He rolled over onto his stomach, and nuzzled his face into the leaves that lay all around him. Emotional buildup wasn't something he dealt with well. Thinking back on last night wasn't that bad considering that all of it was a little dulled from the alcohol he had let himself down.
So he might have had a bit of a thing going for Neil all along, but it wasn't something that he consciously acknowledged, and despite the fact that Neil was drunk as shit when he was messing around, somewhere Neil knew that there was something wrong with Steve, and, well that was enough to be too much. Finding nice people, and ones that would accept you as close friends weren't common, so Neil had been special to Steve, but whatever. Screw him. Steve had always gotten well enough along without people around him, and it wasn't like he was really into the whole scene that he'd been in with Neil.
"HEY?!" someone shouted. Steve scrunched up his face at the noise. Was somebody yelling at him? Go away. Just, go away, he thought. "Hello?" somebody said closer again. Steve groaned a bit, and thought of rolling over to see whether the person was talking to him, but figured that he didn't really care if they were talking to him; the leaves and grass were pretty damn comfy.
"Whoooaah!" Steve let out as somebody bodily rolled him over. He squinted up at some guy crouched over him, and chuckling a little bit.
"Something worth laughing at?" Steve asked.
"Yeah, I thought you were hurt, or diabetic or something." the guy replied.
"What? Diabetic? Why the hell would you think I'm diabetic?" Steve groaned.
The man laughed a bit. "Because I thought you were passed out on the ground, and you had a practically full bottle of vodka nexta you. Who passes out after taking 2 swigs but a diabetic having some type of blood problem?"
Steve scowled at the man, who on better examination proved to be a guy about his age, or a little older. He was still standing over Steve, and blocking the sun, so it was actually proving rather hard to make out his face. Steve scowled despite the man's pleasant manner. "So i'm a little bit of a light weight. Thanks for pointing it out." Steve tried to stand up, and the guy helped lift him with and arm under his right. The sudden vertical change caught Steve full on, and he found himself leaning into the man, trying to adjust despite the vertigo.
"Whoah, relax." the man breathed into Steven's ear. Steve felt the man holding him upright, keeping him still. "Just hangon, it'll pass in a second."
Annoyingly the man was right, and Steve pushed away from the closeness of the guy, whose chest he had been leaning on. He'd felt warm.
"Uhm, thanks." Steven stammered. "Your name is^Å?"
"Will. It's Will. Hey, can I take you somewhere? I was gonna go for a run, but I've lost the sudden need."
Steve thought back on the night before and the fact that his parents didn't know where he was. Suddenly he didn't feel like going back home any time soon. Will didn't seem like too bad of a guy either. He was a little bit taller than Steve, and with his dark auburn hair cut short was rather good looking too. God, aren't the nice ones always fucking gorgeous also. "Yeah," Steve agreed. "I'd love to cleanup a bit before I try going back home if you don't mind."
"Heh. Not at all. I've been in the same boat a couple of times. C'mon." Will led Steve back to a car that was apparently his, and they both got in. Will said that he lived not too far away and, go figure, he was also a senior in high school. Steve relaxed a bit more, and they started to talk about school and college possibilities. It was a normal enough ride back to Will's house, but Steve was slightly put off by the kindness and straightforward demeanor of this guy that'd he'd just been rolled over by that morning. The sunlight and cold air had mixed to make him rather grumpy to begin with, but had also added to the intensity of the situation. Why the hell was he even accepting a ride from Will in the first place?
"Hey^Å'ello?" Will said in soft voice. "Anybody home?"
"Yeah, sorry. Just dozing off."
"You don't mind if I ask how you ended up in the field do you." Steve looked out his window for a second, and turned back to glance at Will.
"I just got bored and was gonna head out to^Å" Steve stopped and couldn't continue. He started thinking about last night and how angry he had been with himself and with Neil and how he was now looking forward to a year of loneliness every day of school. His heard started spinning and he was suddenly unable to stop himself from letting it go. Steve started to shake as he looked out the window and cried quietly. Will didn't say anything to him. It seemed like he wasn't going to either.
"head out to^Å?" Will repeated before he turned his head to look at Steve. He hadn't even realized that Steve had begun to cry. He slowed the car and pulled into a driveway. "Heeey, relax." he said putting a hand on Steve's shoulder. Will slid out of the car and wend around to open Steve's door. He leaned in over Steve and unbuckled him, helping him get out. Steve stood there, sniffling a little bit as Will shut the door. Will stepped toward Steve and brought him in to a tight hug. The two stood there for a little while as Steve came back from his lapse. Eventually Will let go and led Steve up toward the house that they had been standing in front of. When they got inside Will turned and looked softly at Steve.
"You weren't just out last night, were you?" Steve was looking back at Will, slightly irritated that he even had to think about this at the moment.
"No," he got out, "I was minding my own business last night until I woke up this morning because somebody was shaking me. Nevermind all of this. Thanks for the ride, I'll see you around." Steve pushed his way past and back outside again. It was mid afternoon, nearly two hours later at that point, and he wasn't that far from home. He started to walk in the direction that he thought was toward his house, not even thinking about the boy he had just left behind. Steve got about two houses down the street when he saw a large bird flying overhead. As he took another step he inadvertently stepped on a patch of ice and he feet flew out from under him. The back of his head connected hard with the concrete before he rolled to a rest at the side of the curb. The pain was immense, but Steve hadn't even yelled out as he fell. He was just staring up at the sky, squinting through the pain, trying to think of why he was still going on. It was tiring to think, to breathe, to move. He just lay there trying to let go of his existence. That is until a shadow fell over his face. For the second time that day Steve looked up and saw Will standing over him. He just groaned and rolled over so that he was face down.
"Hey, I saw you fall. Despite the fact that you're obviously more fucked up than I could've guessed earlier, you can't keep laying in the road. You're gonna get hit." There was a pause before Will went on again. "Just come on back with me. I know you don't really know me, I'm sorry I pressured you back there. I can tell you're tired, and not quite better from last night. If you come back I already have a fire going in the den in my basement and you're welcome to crash no questions asked."
Steve didn't have the energy to respond and just grunted.
"Okay, fine." Will huffed. Suddenly he hoisted Steve from the ground and was carrying him like in one of those movies. It was ridiculous, and highly embarrassing in the least, but Steve didn't really care, and just sagged a bit as he was bodily taken back up the road and inside. Will carried Steve down a flight of stairs and into the den where it truly was warm and rather comfortable. Steve let out a little yelp as he was dropped onto a couch, and sat up to watch Will walk away, and presumably back upstairs. Steve didn't know what to do. He looked around the room, which was rather muted in its construction, and soon lay down to sleep. He dreamt of empty hallways and blurred faces. He awoke at one point when the fire popped, and found that he had been covered with a heavy blanket. What was he doing here, and who was this guy who had come out of nowhere to help him? Surely this was nothing more than a momentary comfort before he returned to real life.
I wrote this section while listening to Damien Rice's album 9, so i think it took on a bit of a depressive tone. hehehe, i'll see what i can do about that as i continue. I wasn't sure whether I'd continue this, or if anybody's even reading, but I just might after. Anything to say? Iahveh@gmail.com
