In chapter one Brendan opened his mouth at the party and had morning after regrets.
Open Question. Chapter 2.
"Yo Brendan, where's Phillip?"
He always said `yo'.
"Hi Martin. He's round at Mike's. I think he'll be back in about an hour."
Brendan had decided that following Robin's advice and acting friendly was the best thing to do.
"How did you go on Saturday? I felt real sorry for you having to work after our heavy night."
"Yeah, I crashed all Sunday."
"Hey, it was sure some night?"
"I guess."
"Are you staying?"
"Not for long. Just till these songs download. Probably another ten minutes."
Martin got interested. He was really into music and played the guitar well. He had a look at the tracks and said there were a couple of others Brendan would probably like then wrote the titles on a piece of paper for the next time Brendan was downloading.
When Brendan left Martin came with him saying he was going to the shops. That soon changed, well maybe the shops would be after, to persuading Brendan to go to the old tree in the park.
When they got there he rolled a joint and at first Brendan said no.
"Why not? You paid for it. It's not much if that's what you're worried about.
That was exactly right, plus having to avoid his mum when he got home. Martin inhaled then put the joint on Brendan's lips.
"Go on, just a quickie."
Brendan accepted then a few minutes later said he should go.
"What's the rush? Just one more puff."
Brendan excepted because that was a cut off statement.
"How's Mister Perky? Is he still pissed at me?"
That was actually funny and Brendan had to laugh.
"No."
"What do I call him then? Mister Perky or DonkeyDong?"
Brendan wanted to say neither but he thought of a better way.
"Who cares? Whichever you like."
"DD then. Its suit you better, don't you reckon?"
"I suppose."
Martin rummaged in his day pack and handed over a CD.
"What's this?"
"A present for DD. To make him happy."
"Um, thanks. I think."
As soon as Brendan got home he had a look at the CD. It was all naked guys with big dicks.
***
"Yo Brendan."
"Hi Martin."
"How's DD?"
It was the same greeting as last time and Brendan realised it was going to be a routine.
Ignore. Ignore. Ignore.
"Phillip wants to know if you're staying for tea?"
"I wish. Mum would yell if I did. I'll have to leave in half an hour."
"Okay, I'll tell him."
"Hey, did DD like the CD?"
"I suppose."
Brendan had decided to try and keep on with the no big deal approach.
"Did any of them wake him up?"
None of your business was the thought.
"Sort of."
"I thought so. Hey, I downloaded those songs for you."
While Brendan was looking to see how many songs were there, the day pack opened and another CD appeared.
"Here, I bet DD likes these even more."
Brendan escaped as soon as he could without being obvious, saying he had to go upstairs to peel potatoes, which was true enough. Mike was there and when Robin turned up just in time for the meal she listened with fascination to one of his stories about a close call for a patient with a heart attack. They all listened of course but Robin always said she couldn't understand how anyone could stand being an emergency nurse.
There was lots of talk about the hike in two weeks because Phillip had organised a good pack for Brendan from somewhere, and been talking to friend who was going with them. Robin explained how she'd been held up with overtime work and Phillip got angry because she was always doing it and never getting paid.
At home Brendan loaded the rucksack to see what it felt like. Unreal.
What had Martin put on the CD this time?
More nude guys, but this time they all had huge erections. They must have been photo-shopped. Their file names went from DD1 up to DD15.
***
"Six-thirty at the park?"
"Sorry, helping my neighbour, can't make it."
"Tomorrow?"
"Okay, see you."
Brendan sent the last text message because Martin would just keep trying.
***
"Yo Brendan. How's DD?"
"What's happening?"
"Nothing special. Just wanted to get together. Doing anything this Sunday?"
"Yes, hiking in the hills."
"Bummer, I thought we might get Robin to drive us to the beach. How far are you hiking?"
"Fifteen kilometers."
"Hmm. I might do guitar practice then."
That worked well. Martin would never want to walk that far, especially if there were hills. Martin lit up and put a joint in Brendan's mouth, then lit another for himself.
Martin carried on and before long had Brendan laughing. He did know how to do that when he wanted to.
"You're feeling good aren't you?"
That was true and so the second joint went to Brendan's lips.
"Big draw and see if you can hold it longer than me."
They'd done this before and Brendan could win easily and he did.
"Cool."
"Cool."
"Smile."
"Smile."
They both laughed.
"How's DD?"
"Cool."
"DD's hot. Did DD like the CD a lot?"
"That's funny."
"What's funny?"
"DD cool, DD's hot, DD likes the CD a lot."
"Oh My God."
"You sound like Robin."
"Oh My God."
There was more laughter.
"Did DD wake up?"
"Yeah, DD woke up."
"Which DD did DD like best?"
"My God, say it again, so many D's."
Martin said it slowly this time.
"Which number did DD like best?"
"Number?"
"On the CD. Donkey Dong's."
"Um. ...Number five I guess. They were fakes.
"DD5?"
"Yeah, DD5."
"Cool."
"Cool."
"How's DD?"
"DD's cool."
"Hanging high or hanging low?"
"What?"
Martin reached over and pressed his hand against Brendan's shorts. Brendan rolled away.
"Don't touch."
Martin laughed.
"He's hanging low. I wish we were sitting on the beach."
Brendan loved the beach but could only get there when Phillip or Robin drove.
"Yeah, me too."
"We'll ask Robin. We could go in the holidays."
"I'm going hiking."
"After that."
"Cool."
"Arm wrestle?"
Brendan easily won the arm wrestle. That came from chopping wood at home. He looked at the trees in the dusky light.
"I'm heading off. It's nearly dark."
"Okay, don't forget to ask Robin about the beach. Hey, how's he hanging?"
Brendan jumped away from the grope just a moment too slowly.
***
"Shh!"
Phillip stopped dead and Brendan bumped into him. They'd been walking for nearly two hours and were near the highest part of the track. Ten meters past the bend they'd just reached was a wombat, standing frozen and looking at them. It moved it's head in the native grass, nibbled at something then lifted its head, in full alert. For a few minutes the show went on, gradually working closer them in a pattern of snuffle, nibble and look, till as if suddenly sensing their presence, it twisted in a new direction and waddled into the under-story of the bush.
"Wow, how was that? I'm never been so close to one in the wild. Keep your eyes open."
Brendan hadn't either. You usually only saw them ambling into the bush when you were driving at night. A bit further along they found fresh diggings and the entrance to a huge wombat burrow, then examined some strange white fungus growing almost the whole length of a partially decomposed log.
"Hungry?"
Phillip laughed when he asked because Brendan's answer was always yes.
"Well hang on for another quarter hour. I've got a special place."
A quarter of an hour was easy to cope with.
"This is it."
Brendan wondered what Phillip meant. They'd left the walking trail and all he could see was a clump of tall ferns against the embankment at the side of the bush road.
"Have an explore behind the tree ferns."
Wow, there was a narrow gully cut into the earth which turned at a right angle into a covered section. After another turn you could just make out an old door. Phillip produced a candle stump and they entered a concrete room. The ceiling was concrete too, so it was like being in a big underground box. There were some old rags in one corner and a few pieces of wood.
"What is this place?"
"It's an old fire refuge from when this was a timber logging area. There's nowhere safe outside in a wildfire and the bends are so no rush of hot air or wind can come straight at the door."
"How did you know it was here?"
"From an article in the local Historical Society book. It was quite hard to find."
They sat next to each other with their backs against the wall, eating their food and talking about what it might have been like to experience a wildfire. Phillip blew the candle out and it was almost pitch black.
"I wonder if they ever had to use it?"
"I don't know. The article didn't say. Maybe in the `39 fires when everything went, but not after that. This area's been water-catchment ever since so there's no logging allowed."
Something cold moved against the back of Brendan's neck, making him jump and yell. Phillip was laughing.
"Gotcha."
"You wait. Why did it feel so cold?"
"I pressed my fingers against the concrete for a while."
"It freaked me. I thought it was a spider."
Brendan made his own fingers cold and there was a big laugh when he gave Phillip a payback.
"Don't do that. It felt creepy even when I knew it was coming."
So of course Brendan did it again.
***
"Yo Brendan, how's DD?"
"Hi Martin."
"How's he hanging? High or low?"
"Low."
A couple of meetings with Brendan had ingrained this as part of the greeting pattern. If Brendan gave his answer quickly enough he evaded a grope.
Brendan was listening to some of his latest music tracks and organising them into different folders. Martin had been upstairs doing some science stuff with Phillip because of a test he had the next day and hadn't studied for. Martin watched over Brendan's shoulder till the soundtrack finished.
"Did you notice?"
"What?"
"When you started the computer?"
"Um. ...That extra user?"
"Yeah, log off and I'll show you."
Brendan logged off and the user choice screen appeared. There was an extra and he'd known as soon as he'd seen the DD title that it was Martin's work.
"See if you can get in."
Brendan clicked but a password was required.
"DD is the clue."
Brendan tried DD but it didn't work.
"That's right, but in full."
Brendan typed `DONKEYDONG' but again the error message flashed.
"Isn't that what you meant?"
Martin was enjoying this.
"It needs a number on the end. Look at the reminder clue."
The clue said, 'my favorite', that puzzled him for a bit but then he understood.
"Very funny Martin."
"I knew you'd get it. Go on."
`DONKEYDONG5'
Martin pressed the enter key and a few seconds later his face was flaming red.
With a totally black background and filling the screen from top to bottom was the number five picture with the big erection.
Except that the model's head had been replaced with Brendan's.
At first glance it looked real. The colors didn't quite match but Brendan didn't notice that till later. Rather shocked, Brendan stared for a few seconds. Annoyance flickered but he held it down and tried to keep with the `don't care' attitude.
"You're crazy Martin. What did you do this for?"
"It looks real doesn't it? It took ages. It's for for storing your pictures without burning CDs all the time."
"But what if someone sees? Anyone can use this computer."
That was true. It was down here so Phillip could keep his main computer to himself and not have to worry about viruses or anyone mucking up his settings.
"How could they? You'd have to tell them the password."
"Phillip might wonder who the new user is."
"No way. He never uses this computer. Click on the folder."
"What folder?"
The only folder Brendan could see was the recycle bin.
"It's invisible, but it's easy to find."
With that picture and the anticipation Martin was showing there was only one place it could be.
"Martin, you're crude."
"I know. ...Every time you click on DD something happens."
Brendan clicked on the erection and pictures from the CD showed up in filmstrip mode. Martin grabbed the mouse and clicked back to the embarrassing desktop picture.
"Hey, did you talk to Robin yet?"
"Yes, she's all keen and she wants to go for two days."
"Two days? How can she manage that?"
"She's got a rostered day off on Tuesday, and she can work on Sunday instead of Monday, and we've got no choice. It has to be Anglesea.
"Unreal. Brendan you're a legend."
Martin was always at his friendliest when things were happening the way he wanted them.
"How's DD hanging?"
That was unexpected and Brendan said high by mistake.
"I meant low."
Martin pointed at the screen.
"High."
Brendan went upstairs and talked with Phillip about the hike and other stuff till he knew Martin would be gone then returned to use the Internet for a while.
He logged into DD and stared at the picture again then clicked on the erection. That did feel strange, almost like he was touching himself, and it was even weirder to think of Martin doing the clicking. The original, when he found it, brought the arousal that the changed version hadn't. He moved the mouse over the erection again and wondered how Martin had made the clicking thing work. He went back to the changed picture and right clicked to look at the properties. It was easy, you just ticked a couple of boxes.
This was quite interesting and it didn't take long to get DONKEYDONG5 to open up DONKEYDONG11, which was the next sexiest, and a click on DONKEYDONG11's erection to go back to DONKEYDONG5.
Brendan logged off then, in case Phillip came down to offer him a lift home.
