"Order up" Chapter 12
"Boy I don't know what the hell is wrong with you today. You lost your house, get over it. I told you raisin toast not biscuit. You mess up my tip money and you and I will have a problem now get me my damn toast." Lizzie screamed through the window. Walter handed her the toast without a word. Moments later Lizzie slung a plate through the window that landed on the floor in the kitchen. "Wake the fuck up Walter. Charlotte's customers are stopping me and getting me to bring the food back. They wanted two eggs over easy and hash browns. You sent an omelette and grits. " Lizzie said. Without speaking Walter pulled the ticket and handed it to Lizzie. Lizzie looked at the ticket. "I don't give a damn what she wrote. They wanted two eggs over easy and hash browns now FIX IT." She shouted.
Brody pulled up to the diner right behind Luke. Both men stood at the door. "You alright there buddy ?" Luke asked. "Not sure yet. I know he is in there and I am a little scared to go in. Not sure how he will act when he sees me." Brody said. "They look a little busy so maybe his mind is occupied." Luke said. Both walked in and took a booth so that they could see the window to the kitchen but they would not be the first thing Walter saw when he looked out.
Charlotte once again ended up as their waitress. "Order in." She called out as she placed the ticket on the wheel. Both men had asked for coffee. Brody ended up with a soft drink and Luke with a water with lemon. Both men just slid the drink to the side. Brody bit his tongue as Lizzie returned to the window two or three times cursing and slinging plates at Walter. Charlotte stopped at the table once with her now scrap of paper asking the two men which role in the play they felt would best suit her. "I am best suited for the lead role but I don't want to make the rest of the cast look too bad. " She said before moving off.
"Order up Charlotte." Walter called out. Charlotte took the two plates and carried them to the table. Brody and Luke looked at each trying to decide who wanted what of each plate because nothing they ordered was on either. Mr. Herndon came through the door arriving to work just as their orders came up.
Brody's cell phone rang. It was his friend from the state Fire Marshall's office. "So I can charge that if I want too ?" Brody asked. They talked for another minute. "Thanks buddy I may need that paperwork." Brody said. About that time he heard Lizzie shouting. "Walter damn your soul we need ice. Why can't you get anything right today. I need ice NOW." she shouted. Brody went to move out of the booth and Luke grabbed his hand and shook his head no.
The two men could hear shouting coming from the kitchen. Walter was backing through the door with a bucket of ice with Mr. Herndon following him shouting. "If you can't come to work properly dressed for the job then I am not paying you for the day. You know what I expect and you show up looking like some homeless man in shorts and a t shirt. You will work the rest of your shift but you won't get paid. This will cost you even more by the time I am done with your sorry ass." Mr. Herndon shouted.
The front door flew open while Mr. Herndon was shouting. "Where is that worthless bastard. There he is. You know what you cost me ? You are going to pay every damn dime. My camper, the work to get power back on out there. You are paying every dime." Mr. Turner shouted. Brody grabbed the microphone on his uniform and called dispatch for back up. Luke was not quick enough to stop Brody from standing this time. "That's enough." Brody said. "This is non of your damn business." Mr. Herndon shouted. Brody took Walter by the arm. Taking the bucket of ice from him he threw it to the floor. "Clean that shit up. I am not cleaning up your damn mess." Lizzie shouted. "You shut the fuck up." Brody said pointing his finger at Lizzie. "Walter just quit." Brody said. "He can't quit I will take him to court and take every penny he makes the rest of his life." Hr. Herndon shouted.
"That sorry bastard will have to work seven days a week from open to close just to pay me. This is non of your business Harbin so butt out." Mr. Turner shouted. About that time another trooper came through the door. "Need some help Brody ?" He asked. "Yes by order of the fire Marshall arrest that man for negligent arson." Brody said. "Me ? That bastard there is the one that did it. Arrest him." Mr. Turner shouted. "You going to do this the easy way or the hard way ?" The trooper asked.
"Enough. This diner is closed. Everyone out." came a strong elderly voice. Old lady Mitchell had been there for breakfast. "Go about your business Ms. Mitchell this does not concern you." Mr. Herndon said. "WHAP" Ms. Mitchell's walking cane rang out through the diner as she slapped it across the counter. "I said the diner is closed." Ms. Mitchell said. "You can't do that. " Mr. Herndon said. "I guess I can. I own the building." she said. "And I pay rent." Herndon said. "To yourself maybe. The reason I don't pay full price for my food here is because you have not paid rent like you were suppose to in over a year so this diner is closed." Ms. Mitchell said. "You won't get any rent then." Herndon said. "My nephew Adam is here now. He may want his own diner. It will all be his one day anyway." Ms. Mitchell said. "We will talk about this when you calm down." Herndon said. Turning to the second officer that arrived. "Young man can you arrest this man for trespassing for me ?" she asked. "Be glad to ma'am." the officer said. "Wait just a minute." Herndon said.
"For your information I was not telling Walter to quit. I was TELLING you that he quit." Brody said. Walter stood with his shoulders and his head dropped. His body was visibly shaking. "You can't arrest me ?" Mr. Turner said. "I just did." Brody barked. "You have no right. " He shouted. "Officer please read him his rights and remove him." Brody said.
Walter's mind was blank. He looked towards the floor and all he could think was please let me melt into it. His mind was even more scrambled because the scent of Brody seemed to try to calm him but the commotion going on would not allow him to react. "WHAP". "Boy you have fucked up my tips for today. You are going to pay me what I missed." Lizzie shouted. With all the shouting and commotion she had been allowed to get to close and slap Walter across the face. A scream broke everyone's trance when it rang out. Old Lady Mitchell had just hit Lizzie on top of her head as hard as she could with her cane. Brody automatically placed his hand on his gun until his mind could take in what was going on. "I said this place is closed. Now every body out and son I have my cane. No need for the gun." She said.
Walter fell to his knees. His body was starting to shut down and his legs would not hold him. Brody quickly pulled him to his feet. He could look in Walter's eyes and see the they were looking at him but Walter's mind was not behind the eyes. His cheek had a visible hand print where Lizzie had hit him but Brody noticed a trail of blood from Walter's nose from the other side. Brody snapped from Officer to protective lover. Pulling Walter out the door to the parking lot he almost had to carry him.
Brody grabbed some tissue from his patrol car and wiped Walter's nose before handing Walter fresh tissue. "Did she do that ?" Brody asked. Walter just shook his head no knowing that it was mainly nerves. "I need to handle this. DO NOT move." Brody said in a firm but kind tone. "Why ?" Walter said barely able to speak. "Why what ?" Brody. "Why are you doing this? " Walter asked. "Look at me Walter. I am doing this because I care." Brody said placing his and on Walter's arm.
Walter stepped back. He had his back pack in one hand and he dug into his pocket and pulled out some bills and change. "Why do you care ? This is all I have to my name. I have a back pack with a change of dirty clothes, a tooth brush, a dou....., and thirty four dollars and eighteen cents. This is Walter, This is all I have. I have nothing to offer anyone." Walter said and began to loose his battle to stand. He was about to say a douche earlier but had enough sense to realize that would not be in his benefit to admit publicly.
Brody snatched the back pack and dropped it to the ground. He then took and brushed the money to the ground. Stepping close enough to catch Walter he steadied him again. "This is all I want. You have already stolen mine." Brody said as he placed his index finger on Walter's heart. "It is killing me to walk away from you but my job requires it. If I come back and you are missing I will call out the state hounds and have them track you down by scent. I don't plan to ride around all night tonight, like last night trying to find you." Brody said. "You looked for me ?" Walter asked. "I rode all night and looked behind every tree I could find. I thought you were gone and my life was over." Brody said. "I'm sorry." Walter said. "No. I am the one that is sorry. I should have never left you alone at the trailer park but I will be damn if you are escaping me today. Got it ?" Brody said and then smiled. "O.k." Walter said and leaned against the cruiser.
"You come with me Luke Hinson." Old lady Mitchell said. "I need too....." Luke started. "Right now son. You need to walk with me and when we walk I will do the talking and you will do the listening." she said. She turned to head down the street. She handed her cane to Luke. Luke put his arm out for her to hold onto. "I don't need that or the cane son. I don't carry a gun for protection I carry a cane." She said.
They crossed the street headed towards the bank. There was a bench on the sidewalk that Ms. Mitchell directed Luke too. "I am sure you have heard of Milldo Inc. " Ms. Mitchell said. "Yes Ma'am. We lease about two thousand acres of farm land from them. " Luke said. " Milldo also leases that building to your Dad that he has his office in." Ms. Mitchell said. "Yes ma'am I think I remember my Dad mentioning that. "I need to know what your intensions are with my nephew." she said. Luke sat shocked not sure how to approach the subject.
"Adam is a hard worker. As far as I am concerned he can work for us as long as he wants." Luke said. "I guess I should have phrased that better. What are you romantic intensions for my nephew ?" Ms. Mitchell asked. "Umm... What are ......" Luke started. "Son I may be old but I am not dumb. The reason that I ask is that I love my nephew. I know that you are married to a gold digger and are in a loveless marriage. Your father has admitted that to me when we talked." She said. "You talked to my Dad ?" Luke said with a lump in his throat,
"Don't worry. Your Dad is not upset. He was quite happy in fact. The reason I want to know your plan is that my late husband called me Dot. When he died I had to protect myself and everything we had so I started Milldo. The best I could do with Dot Mitchell without putting my name on it." She said. "So you own the bank too ?" Luke asked. " More than one. Your Dad, me, and my lawyer are the only three people in this town that know this. Now you. Adam will get everything I own one day. I need to know what your intensions are." she said.
Luke broke down and told her about the house he owned and that they had promised each other no one else would ever go there. Luke even admitted he had wondered what the fall out would be if he left his wife for Adam. "That's what I thought. I see the way you two look at each other. Promise me that you will not hurt him. This is a small town and you have to keep up appearances, we all know that. I just need to know that you will not take advantage of him and hurt him. I would hate to have to dissolve all your father's leases." she said. "So you are alright with him being gay ?" Luke asked.
"I am an old woman. This world has changed a lot since I was a child. I had an Uncle that was gay but no one would say it aloud. He loved me more than any of the rest of my family. I learned from him that gay is not evil but in some peoples cases a gift from God. I know that your wife is just there for money and stature, there seems to be no love there. I get the feeling that Adam realizes the situation and seems content with it. As long as you are both happy that is all I care. I will say though if you think of Adam as just a flavor of the month play toy you better end it now or you will feel the full wrath of my money." she said. "I would marry your nephew tomorrow if the situation would allow." Luke said.
"I will talk to Adam and tell him I approve so that he does not feel the need to sneak around anymore. You promise to take care of my nephew and make him happy." Ms. Mitchell said. "I don't know what to say." Luke said. "Only two options to say. Either I will or I will end it. You choose." she said. "I will." Luke said and smiled. "I think you are as smitten with him as he is with you. The only other thing I ask is that you do not tell him or anyone else about Milldo. I want my nephew to learn a good work ethic before my wealth falls into his hands." she said. "I will act as surprised as he does when he finds out. I have one question though ?" Luke said. "What is that son ?" she said. "If you have all this money, why that old Cadillac ?" Luke asked. "That is a 1961 Park Avenue model in mint condition with less than thirty thousand miles. It is worth two of those trucks like you drive brand new." she said and smiled.
The banking transaction did not go as smoothly as planned. Ms. Mitchell had wanted to cash a five thousand dollar check. The amount was not the issue. The President of the bank was concerned that she may not need that much cash and wanted to know why she wanted it. The events earlier already had her on edge so she pulled out her phone and called the man that she had hired to run the three banks she owned. The President had never met the man and knew him only by name. He was shocked that Ms. Mitchell could call and he answer the phone when in the past he had to go through the secretary and wait for a call back. The man was quick to apologize to Ms. Mitchell and told her that he was informed to give her anything she wanted anytime she asked and with no questions.
"I never liked that old prick." Luke said as they exited the bank. "Well you won't have to deal with him any longer. He is being replaced after today." Ms. Mitchell said and smiled. As they started back towards the diner Ms. Mitchell stopped Luke. "I have some business with your Dad after our talk. You take this and make sure that Walter gets it." she said. "He won't take charity." Luke said. "It's not charity. I am the one that hit his truck. The mayor, police chief and that prick Herndon made such a big deal of Walter paying for it I didn't say anything. It has haunted me to this day. Especially now that I know what he has had to live through because of me. I would give him a lot more but I can justify to him that this is pay back of the money he had to spend plus interest." she said. "Thank you. I will make sure he gets it." Luke said.
Back at the diner things had calmed some. Another patrolman had arrived and relieved Brody of his responsibilities. Brody had gotten Walter into his cruiser. Luke made it back just as Brody was closing Walter's door. Luke pulled him to the side and explained quickly what Ms. Mitchell had said about the money and wanted him to give it to Walter. "Tell you what. I want you to give it to him yourself but now is not the time. I am taking him to my house. I am going to try to get him to sleep for a couple of hours so why don't you call later and if you don't mind you can bring it to the house." Brody said. "Sounds like a plan. Take care of him please." Luke said. " He is not getting away this time." Brody said.
As the patrol car turned a corner headed out of town the radio blared which startled Walter out of his trance. Brody placed his hand on Walter's and for the first time since his mother passed away Walter broke down and began to cry. It was not a sob but a border line hysterical cry. Brody pulled into a vacant parking lot and reached over and pulled Walter to him in the car. "It's alright baby. Let it all out. Your knight in shining armor is here and I promise no one will ever hurt you again." Brody said. The small part that had not been hysterical in his crying was now full on hysteria.
