The Actress
The children sit in darkness on the floor of the cafetorium, looking intently at the brightly lit stage before them. Hansel and Gretel walked through the forest, ignoring the warnings of their mother and the forest animals. The children gasped when they came upon the gingerbread cottage, and out popped the wicked witch.. a towering figure who loomed over the lost hungry children. The witch was a modern one.. dressed in pointy spike heels, black stockings, a tight black leather sheath skirt with leggy slit, a leather corset, short black cape and forties hairdo. She waved her long red nails at Hansel and Gretel and asked, in a voice not unlike Tina Turners, "Do you want some of my tasty candy?" The audience gasped in horror, and Bob Kemp was happy. He had them in the palm of his hand. Bob Kemp was playing the Witch.
It started at the auditions for this years production of Lynnfield Childrens theatre a group that has been performing in schoools for over 6 years. Bob was brought to the evening auditions by Nancy Shelm, who is the designer of this years production. "We had dated a few times, and we were on our way out to dinner when we stopped by the audition." remembers Nancy. Director Cindy Freedman re- members the audition as being full of women. "I wanted an over powering witch, one big enough to make our Hansel and Gretel look small. I had considered asking a man to play it, but I doubted that we could find one that could meet our schedule of daytime perfor- mances" recalls Cindy. Bob could make the performances, being a self employed computer consultant. He was cajoled into trying out. "I figured that it would be like the witches in MacBeth.. Long gown, hat, warts, all that. It couldn't t hurt." thought Bob.
Bob got the role and Cindy and Nancy went into a huddle. "We had concieved of a modern design, and our which was a cross between Shemantra, a sourceresss from the cartoons and Joan Collins." said Cindy "and we weren't sure how to go on now that Bob had the role." A more traditonal witch was considered, but after seeing Bob at rehearsal we thought maybe it could work. Bob's first inkling of the real design of the part was when Nancy brought rehersal clothes for him.. a tight skirt and heels. "I felt silly walking out in them, but the cast was really supportive" recalls Bob. The cast members remember Bob as quickly learning to move in the new garments.. and having the character of the witch start to take shape. Cindy saw it too " In heels Bob was forced to walk seductively, and the

glamour started to come though." Nancy did a makeup test on Bob and the company was shocked when he arrived at rehearsal in full wig and makeup. It was clear that Bob could play the witch in the way that it was intended.
Nancy designed the costumes. First Bob would wear 4 inch heels with platforms to accentuate the scale difference even more. The basic garment was a black lycra paneled leotard, with high cut legs and an internal construction to nip his waistline. Breastforms would be glued to his skin under the strapless leotard. The leotard was trimmed with lace. The first scene called for the Joan Collins outfit, with padded tap pants to fill out the hipline covered by a satin and leather skirt. Black stockings covered the tan pantyhose that were part of the basic outfit and the bodice was a leather corset patterned after Tina Turner's in Live Aid. A cape coveres the bare back to help hide from the audience.
It was the second costume that was a masterpiece. Designed for the scenes where the witch revealed herself and based on the cartoon sourceress, it was wild. Using a material called celastic Nancy created a rigid breastplate, formed for the female anatomy, colored black and decorated with gold. A short net skirt wrapped from hipbone to hipbone to give fullness to the hips, leaving the leotard showing in the front. Rigid armor panels hung over the skirt. A headpiece of black and gold and high boots completed the outfit.
All that was left was to get Bob into these outfits. He had worn a dress at rehearsal and been through the makeup test, but that could in no way have prepared him for what was to come. In a school setting the audience was too close, and theatrical tricks such as nude mesh would not work. The transformation had to be com- plete. Nancy scheduled him into a local Hair Salon. Bob and Nancys relationship had developed and she tried to ease him into the coming event.
At the studio, Bob lay down for the process. The rehearsals were over, and the fist performances were scheduled for the next Monday. Bob had rescheduled all appointments for the week, but he had no idea how the plans would affect his week. He lay on the chaise as they waxed his hair off his legs, chest, arms and even bikini-line. Bob remembers this as if he was in a daze. " I had grown to love playing the character and knew that I just had to go through with this. I was numb " he recalls. Long acrylic nails were attached to his own fingernails and painted red, and his toenails were painted the same colour. Individual false eyelashes were attached to his eyelids with semi-permanent glue. Using a technique called hair weaving strands of longer human hair were tied to the rooted hair on Bob's head. This would allow Bob's own hairline to be seen in the severe hairstyles that were part of the Witches design, but to have the volume and fullness of a womans hair. This amalgam was dyed the hot red-gold colour that had been selected, and styled.
At the end of this process Bob no longer looked like Bob. He stood in a short kimono looking at the long red hair, deep lashes, stoking his newly manicured hand over his hairless body. Nancy helped him The_actress________________________________________________________________3_
dress in jeans and go home. Nancy had known that Bob would be unable to appear in public as man after they got through with him, and she had prepared for this. He would stay in her spare room. She had hung a wardrobe for him in the closet. First though would be the final fittings of the costumes. Nancy glued the breastforms to Bob's body using pure latex adhesive. She showed him the pink lycra G sting, explaining how to push the testes up into their cavities and draw the penis between the buttocks. It fit very snugly and the straps were high enough not to give him a visible panty line. Sheer nylons.. Alive by Hanes.. came after this, the seam cutting a vertical line across his now flat pubis. Bob stoked the seam for a few moments, his long nails making a quiet sound as they moved across the taut pantyhose. The constructed leotard came next.. made with a wide band of rubberized elastic at the waist, it was even difficult to slip over the smooth pantyhose on his hips. Bob gasped as it was moved into position and bit on his waist. Nancy adjusted the lace trimmed legholes to cover the tiny bit of scrotum that showed through the panty hose. They were quite high cut. The top of the leotard was looped with an elastic band that kept it over the breasts. There was a V right at the center of the top that allowed a peek at the artificial cleavage. Bob was not allowed to look into a mirror until the makeup was applied.
Nancy had researched thoroughly and discovered that a special flesh coloured latex makeup had been developed for "Tootsie". This makeup created almost a mask of rubber that completely covered beard growth and simulated the fine pored skin of a woman. Nacy ap- plied a thin layer to the Bob's jaw, and as it set every trace of shadow was gone. This was blended into a sheerer foundation to cover the rest of the face. Nancy's first thought was to use Covermark, a very opaque makeup by Lydia O'Leary, but she was concerned about the textural problems. Bob's hair was done.. mass of red-gold .. and his eyelashes were long dark and curly. Nancy skilfully blended natural tones, basically blusher colours into a layered eye look and contoured cheeks. Her first thought of using "Instant Face Lifts" ,glue on tabs that could lift the skin, giving more contour to the cheekbones, and an uplift to the eye and brow, had been unnecessary. Lipstick was followed by gold gloss that picked up the gold tones in the hair colour. Nancy was pleased with her work. The sienna-amber-gold shades of the eyeshadows brought out the eyes and made the face work. A touch of colour to accentuate the cleavage and a genourous dusting of gold powder over the bare shoulders were all that was needed.
She helped Bob into the black heels and stood him up in front of a mirror. Bob remembers the setting first. " I saw a pink bedroom with rufffles and lace in that mirror. I slowly realized that the woman standing in front of it was me. My legs were long and shapely ending at a cleft that made me want to touch it. I saw the long red nails run over the shiny black fabric, touching the seam of the pantyhose, and felt myself stir, though I was held in too tight for it to be visible. The panels in the leotard combined with the structure to make me look slim and curvy. My breasts were large and firm, and I was a bit embarssed to see that the nipples were visible through the thin 4____The_actress_______________________________________________________________
stretch fabric. The hair hung over my shoulders and I could feel it move gently over by bare skin. My naked armpits felt free and clean, but my face was changed.. I had dissapeared. I was becoming the witch." Nancy saw the change too. "His movements started to change as he looked at himself and he started to preen. I saw his teeth begin to show against the Cinnamon lipstick as his smile widened. He began to speak and I knew that he had fallen into character. The costume had made the actor come all the way out and Bob dissapear. He was the witch."
He wanted to try on the costumes. First went on the padded tap-pants, giving him a full female figure. Over that went a tricot slip cut up the left leg and trimmed with lace and a glove leather skirt with a matching slit. A leather corset top went on top, laced tightly in front. The look was devastating. The clothing was made to fit, made to scale, and Nolan Miller would have been proud. Bob was into it now.. he started complaining about the look not being finished, and Nancy pulled out the black stockings to be worn over the tan ones.
After the final fitting of the costumes, Bob and Nancy headed home to her apartment. Bob wore a gray plaid skirt and white sweater Nancy had brought to the theater for him. He still had the breast forms and constructed leotard. As they neared her apartment, Nancy bumped into Fred, her next door neighbor. She introduced Bob as her friend Bobbie from out of town. Fred smiled and looked Bob/Bobbie up and down. He invited them to join him for dinner, and offered to fix Bobbie up with his friend Steve. Nancy, while tempted to accept, declined saying Bobbie was suffering from jet lag.
Once safe inside Nancy's apartment, Bob breathed a heavy sigh of relief. "It was really odd to have him look at me that way..." Bob said, "with a sense of sexual attraction...it was also exciting in an odd sort of way. I may get to like this!" Nancy led him into the spare room where she had prepared an entire wardrobe for him. She showed him the dresses, the skirts, the jumpsuits...Nancy had really gotten carried away shopping. After Bob had seen all his clothes (and had lingered over the lingerie), Nancy helped him get undressed. Much to her surprise, he decided to leave on the breast forms and G string, and put on one of Nancy's robes. He said, "I have to develop the character some more...".
The opening night performance was a great success. Someone passed a dozen red roses to Bob during the curtain call. After the performance, the cast went out to a local pub for a celebration. Bob, of course, went as Bobbie. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- To find out more about the anon service, send mail to help@anon.penet.fi.
