Chapter Fourteen: A Plan Is Hatched
Kevin sat in his cell waiting for his turn to be interrogated. He had heard the corrections officers come for and bring back Nick Stevens, now the detectives had Dan. The three men were being kept in separate holding cells; for safety, and so it would be more difficult for them to communicate with each other. Kevin heard the door lock buzz and the door at the end of the cell block opened up. First through the opening was one of the COs, then Dan Castleberry, then another CO. Kevin watched as Dan was lead into his own cell. Knowing they were coming for him next, Kevin stood and placed his hands on the yellow handprints painted on the wall, something he had done many times in his 32 years. Latches clicked and clunked as Dan was unshackled and locked back in his cell, Kevin's cell was opened next.
Ok, Mr. Morse, please don't try anything. Lower your left hand.
Cl-cl-cl-click!
Now your right hand.
Cl-cl-cl-click!
Kevin's hands were now secured behind him. The two COs guided him out of the cell, off the block, and into the interrogation room. The younger CO sat Kevin at one end of the table, unshackled one handcuff and locked it into a ring mounted to the table; the COs then left the room. Opposite Kevin sat Dennis, another detective, and an older man in a rumpled suit who looked like a lawyer.
Good afternoon, my name is Detective Delia Towne, and I'm sure you've met Lieutenant Dennis James, and this is Archibald Nott, he's one of the public defenders. Ok, your name, for the record, is Kevin Roy Morse...ah...junior, is this correct?
Maybe it is, maybe it isn't.
You should answer the question, Mr. Morse.
Thank-you for the advice, Archie. Mr. Morse?
Yeah, my name is Kevin Roy Morse junior. Big deal, you've got nothing on me.
Dennis smiled, and passed a sheet of paper from a stack he had to Archie, who looked grimly at it.
Actually, Kevin, may I call you Kevin? You've created quite a stir this morning: harassment, attempted assault of a sworn law enforcement officer, and they have video of you skulking along behind said officer in the store and parking lot, so that easily adds stalking to your charges.
That faggot would have deserved it.
Dennis tightened up in his seat, but Delia placed her hand on his arm.
Mr. Morse, such language offends me, and I'm sure, as your new lawyer, Archie would advise you to watch what you say, this is of course, I might remind you, on the record.
Whatever, you're going to shaft me anyway.
This time when he smiled Dennis passed a sheaf of papers to Delia. The records tracking tag had Kevin's name and state correctional ID number on it.
Is this the whole record, Dennis?
No, ma'am, that's just the summery and then only the stuff since 18.
Hum, someone's been busy. Let's see... couple counts of possession, domestic assault, general assault, theft, robbery, armed robbery, attempted murder, manslaughter, vehicular manslaughter, drunk driving, less then honorable discharge from the US Army for assaulting an officer, in and out of prisons most of your adult life. Seems like you enjoy spending time in jail... Anyway, why don't you tell us what exactly happened this morning?
Alright, see, I was at the store to pick up a case of bee... uh, soda, when that fair... when that guy ran his cart into me.
Kevin, I need to remind you as your lawyer, that buying alcohol is a violation your probation, and Delia warned you about your language once, I'm sure she doesn't want to have to warn you again. Please, continue.
Like I was saying...
Sitting through the third telling of the same story was not Delia, Dennis, or Archie's idea of fun but it was necessary in order to hear each person's differences and similarities. When Kevin was done, he was thanked, the COs were called, and then he was lead back to his cell.
Delia waited for Archie to gather his things and leave the room before turning to Dennis.
Well, what do you think?
Geez, Del, it seems pretty clear what happened. I mean, like, the whole town and surrounding area knows Brad's gay, so no surprise something like this would happen eventually. Then again though, none of them actually touched him...
Yeah, I know. That's what has me kind of iffy on charges. But then again, with all of their priors a judge just may throw the book, and the whole book!, at them if we play our cards right. We'll just have to see.
Meanwhile...
You guys believe that bitch and the fucking fag lover cop? Charge us with a-temp-ted assault, we never even touched that queer!
I know, Kevin, I think we're gonna get fucked over. What about you Nicky?
Don't fucking call me Nicky, especially not while we're in jail! I really don't care what happens to us as long as we get to kick that cock sucker's ass! I'm gonna beat him until he can't scream anymore and his momma won't even recognize him!
Keep it down...Nicky...both of you listen up, I've been thinking.
Kevin laid out his plan for his two hired guns over the next hour and a half. Then the door at the end of the cell block opened again. One of the COs poked his head into the door way and bellowed.
LIGHTS OUT! GET SOME SLEEP!
Then he snapped off the light and slammed the door shut. Kevin kept quiet until he was sure the CO was gone away from the door.
Ok, guys, let's get some sleep, we've got work to do in the morning.
