Jonathan 33

November gave way to December and Jonathan appreciated the fact that the weather was getting warmer and sunnier while it was getting colder, damper and darker back home.

He made his first fifty at cricket before being run out, on fifty five, and it was his own fault. He enjoyed the company of Josh and Sailor, and through them met other guys around the same age. He knew his gaydar was not as highly sensitive as it was for some. He wondered if it worked somehow differently in New Zealand. He looked on Gaydar, Silverdaddies and Caffmos but there seemed to be no one who caught his eye who lived near Napier. He realised that there were only three and a half million people in New Zealand and over a third of these lived in Auckland.

He liked life in New Zealand. In many ways it was a slower, freer culture than back home. There seemed to be more time to do the relaxing things of life. It was less of a rat race. The fun things he did with Kevin and Owen were good, as far as they went. He knew he was still looking for that special someone. He decided that if nothing happened by April he would return home to the UK. He would be in time for the cricket season there. And then in the autumn he could go up to University and get back on course just two years later than he had planned when he had had the bust up with his parents.

On the first Friday in December, Josh and Sailor had gone off to the bar where they usually assembled. Jonathan had a small job to finish and went to his car just five minutes after them. He was just about to get into his car when he saw Joe Franklin's nephew looking despondently at one of his car tyres. "What's the problem, Olly?"

"Look at that! A bloody flat! It'll take me several minutes to change the wheel."

"Why don't you hop in, and I'll run you round to the bar, and then when we've had a drink I'll bring you back here."

"Would you?"

"Go on, hop in."

It only took about five minutes to drive round to the bar. Olly moaned about getting a flat, but admitted the tyre was rather worn.

They had the usual drink with the others who worked for Joe Franklin. Then they made their way back to the yard.

"Thanks for that, Jon. I'm grateful for the help. I'll get on with changing the wheel." He obviously expected Jonathan to drive off, but instead Jonathan got out of his car. Olly soon had the boot open and the spare wheel out. Jonathan got hold of the jack and proceeded to get the side of the car lifted.

Olly soon had the old wheel off and the spare one back on.

"How do you keep fit then, Olly?" asked Jonathan.

"What do you mean?"

"Well, the muscles in those arms are not from pressing down keys on a keyboard."

"Oh! I swim."

"Seriously?"

"I go swimming five or six mornings in the week. I get there for when the baths open, at 8.00, and swim for at least an hour. Then I pop home for some breakfast. That's why it's always about ten o'clock when I get to work."

"So you're not lazing around in bed?"

"Not at all. Why?"

"Josh and Sailor said you were a late riser."

"I bet they put it in more colourful language than that."

Jonathan nodded and laughed.

"They like their bit of fun. But I must be going, Mum will be wondering what's happened to me. Thanks again."

"See you on Monday."

Jonathan had cause to go into the office two or three times each week. Now he had some more positive conversation with Oliver Franklin. Josh and Sailor continued to regard Olly as a subject for mirth, and whenever possible the object for a practical joke. To them he was simply a nerd, a young man obsessed with the efficient running of the office. They took for granted their own physical abilities, and like many young people just failed to think. To Jonathan Olly was now someone with character, and not some cut out figure lurking in the shaded recesses of the company office.

"Did you have a good swim this morning?" asked Jonathan on one of those mornings.

"Just the usual. An hour and a quarter swimming up and down the baths."

"How many times?"

"I didn't count today. I do sometimes, but I so often start thinking of other things that I lose count."

"What do you think about when you're swimming?"

"That'd be saying," replied Olly with a slightly guilty grin.

On another occasion Jonathan asked. "Do you ever go swimming in the sea? That is always more lively and interesting."

"I used to but not for the last three years."

"Why did you stop?"

"I used to go with my mother. But then she said she was too old, and that I was too fast for her. I have to go with someone, because without my glasses on I might start swimming off towards Chile or Alaska."

"Rather a long way! Have you no one else to go with?"

"Not really. New Zealand is very much a land for the physically fit. When I had my accident I lost all my friends. I would need to go with someone I could trust, to tell me which way I needed to go towards the shore."

"Would you trust me?" Jonathan was to spend the rest of that day wondering what on earth possessed him to ask that.

Olly peered at him through the lenses of his thick glasses. "Yes, I think I would."

"Perhaps we should go sometime."

It was on the longest day of the year in New Zealand that Jon took the next step in the relationship with Oliver Franklin.

"Were you serious about going swimming in the sea together?" asked Oliver, almost shyly.

Jonathan had almost forgotten the suggestion he had made. "Er..yes, I was serious. Why? When do you want to go?"

"I presume you're not eating and drinking, or playing cricket every day over the Christmas break."

Jonathan laughed. "Not quite. So when can we go?"

They looked at the dates and compared their activities, and eventually found they were both free of other commitments on Wednesday 30th December.

"Shall we make a day of it? Take a pack up?"

"Why not!"

"Whose car?"

"Yours. You know the best place to go."

"I know an ideal place about ten miles away. There shouldn't be too many other people around, and the swimming is good there. Usually some good breakers rolling in, makes it all more fun."

"Shall I come round to your place then?"

"Yea."

The next day Oliver added a further detail. "Mum says why don't you come back for a meal in the evening?"

"Thanks; that'd be good."

There is no need to go into details of Jonathan's Christmas. He found it strange to spend most of the day outside in hot bright sunshine. Not to be eating roast turkey and christmas pudding, but to eat a barbeque. They phoned England on Christmas Day evening at nine o'clock, which got the Pridhams in England at nine o'clock in the morning. Jonathan's talk with Lois was short as she was concerned about getting the turkey into the oven before going to church and all the other things that she needed to do. Jonathan spoke to his father for longer, and then asked Michael if he wanted to speak to Kevin.

"Yes, why not?"

Their conversation was slightly strained, but both were trying. They were the first words they had spoken to each other since Janice's funeral nearly two years before, and that had been a very difficult occasion.

Then Jonathan spoke to Abigail and Thomas.

Finally he rang Malcolm at Whitgest.

They gave each other the usual Christmas greetings. Jonathan asked after Simon, and then asked how it was going with Chink?

"Marvellous, Jon. Wonderful. He's rejuvenated me. Not only bed activities, but round the house. He is so helpful, such fun, we are always laughing, and he is so affectionate."

Jonathan laughed.

"That's a dirty laugh, Jon."

"It was meant to be. What's Chink doing for Christmas?"

"Coming over to Luton with me."

"Wow!! What do they know?"

"They know he worked with you. They do not know what he does with Simon and me."

Jonathan again laughed.

"I told them the truth as much as they needed to know and would find acceptable. They were a bit dubious at first. But I took him over unexpectedly, just dropped in one evening. Your Mum was captivated by his charm and acted as though he was a lot younger than he is. Even though I had told them exactly how old he is."

"And dad?"

"He accepts Chink, and they talk about the work Chink is doing."

"No mention of Bill's place?"

"None at all. Would you like to speak to Chink, I heard sounds from above, so I think he's awake."

"Yes, please."

Jonathan heard Malcolm call. "Chink, Jon on the phone."

"Hi, Jon. Great to hear you," came the breathless voice of Chink.

"I hear you've just got up."

"Yes."

"I hope you're respectable."

"Exactly as you've often seen me. All naked, no clothes."

"So how's it going?"

"Wonderful, Jon, wonderful. The work's going well. But to be living here with your Gramps, and with Simon a frequent visitor. What more can I want?"

"I don't know who is the most fortunate, you, Gramps or Simon."

"All three. I'm happy. Simon's happy. Gramps is very happy."

The voice of Gramps was heard in the background. "You can say that again. Your Chinese friend is wonderful. I love him very much, and not just for the things you think."

"But, Jon, how are you? Anyone special in your life?"

"No, no one. I live in hopes still, but they are beginning to fade. I'm thinking I might come back to England."

"It'd be good to see you, Jon." There was a pause, and Jonathan thought he heard a door closing. "Are you getting any action at all?" said Chink quietly.

"Not really. A little relief with Kev and Owen, but apart from that, none at all."

"You poor man. Wish I could help you."

"You look after Gramps and make sure he has a good time."

Chink laughed. "We have many good times. He's, good man! He and Simon, they like a Chinese sandwich."

"A what?"

"A Chinese sandwich. Me in the middle, my cock up one of them, and the other one with his cock up me. I think I am in heaven, two older men giving me what I want, both at the same time."

"Does this happen very often?"

"At least once a week. But your Gramps and I play together every night. Usually he suck me off, or I fuck him; but once twice week he take his viagra and fucks me well and good. He is so like you in many ways."

"Look after him for me, may you both find much pleasure with each other."

"I love your Gramps, Jon. I hope you don't mind?"

"Me mind? I am very happy for you both."

But I wish I had someone to really love, he thought to himself.
