Chapter 1:
My name is Danny. Here is a little background on me. I am 15 years old, about 3 months away from being 16. I live in northern North Dakota in a small town with my parents. I have an older brother who is in the Marines. He is 8 years older than me, so I don't really know him very well, as he has been in the service since I was 10 and is always deployed overseas. But I know I love him, and he loves me.
To say my parents are well off is an understatement. My dad was an original investor in the tech bubble in the 90's, and then put most of his money in the oil industry in North Dakota. The news says he is worth over 25 billion dollars, but I don't know about that. My parents have never let on that we were all that wealthy, in fact, I have gone to public school my whole life. We do have houses in Italy, England, Russia, Hawaii, California, New York, and Florida, so I guess that should be a clue to me that we aren't like other families.
I am, however, a really good golfer. I caddied starting at 11 years old for my dad, and then at 12, I caddied at the local country club. For some reason I was able to see things that other golfers could not see, like how putts would break, and what club to hit with the wind and such. My dad says I am a natural. I don't know about that, but I just find it fun to play.
The high school I go to does not have a golf team, but I play every chance I get. We live on the country club golf course, and I am able to play that whenever I want, and I play it every day in the spring, summer, and fall. Well, weather permitting. It is really cold in North Dakota as you can imagine if you are not familiar. Most of the time I play twice a day. If it is busy, I play at the public courses.
When I had just turned 15, I asked my parents if I could play in the local US Open qualifier tournament which was being played at our local course, and of course, they said yes. I had brought my handicap down to 1.2, which is just under the mark needed to compete. It was early spring in ND, and quite cold when the tournament began. I actually rode my bike with my clubs hanging over my back to the club house, as I do normally, but it felt strange as this was kindoff a big deal. My parents were both working the first day. I didn't expect them to be there. Not because they didn't love me or whatever, but because this was something I was just doing for fun.
On the first tee, I slammed my drive well over 300 yards right down the middle of the fairway and I knew I was going to have a great day after that. It was a par 5, my next shot I could have laid up, or gone for it. I went for it with an aggressive 3 wood and it landed on the green and about 3 feet from the pin. I made that putt for eagle and I was on my way. I will spare you with all the details over the next 17 holes, but I won the local qualifying by 3 shots with a score of 67, and was onto sectional qualifying in the Twin Cities of MN. To say I was amazed is an understatement. My parents were so proud though, as was my brother who was alerted via Twitter from my Dad. I only had 100 followers on Twitter, which were mostly friends from High School, but my dad had 500k followers from being so big in business, so it created a buzz I guess. I was a bit embarrassed about the whole thing to tell you the truth.
"Dad, I am scared about the sectional qualifying. I mean, you told everybody on Twitter about me, and now everybody is going to be expecting me to win".
"Danny, I am just so proud of you. Do you know how big it is for a 15 year old to win a US Open Qualifier?" He said to me.
"I guess Dad. Please don't do that again. I just don't want to get peoples hopes up and stuff." For some reason I think he was doing that because he was proud of me, but I think he had an alternate reason, that was thinking of running for political office at some point. But, I couldn't say too much more because he was my dad...
I could always talk to my mom about everything. She knew I hated attention in any respect and she also knew my secret that I was gay. I only had a few friends, and they weren't even close friends. I would rather just be on the course by myself or with people I didn't know. Being in the spotlight was not for me, but, by winning this tournament, I guess I had no choice. And by winning this, boy did the spotlight get put on me. Suddenly colleges started calling my house asking about my future plans and offering scholarships and all that. I had never thought about any of that to tell you the truth. I always figured I would go to college and become a teacher like my mom, become a veterinarian because I loved animals (we had two Greyhounds that were former racers, and two cats that got along with the greyhounds, somewhat..) or join the military like my brother. Being only 15, I didn't really think too hard about it because... I was only 15!
So we were off to the Twin Cities of MN. We took my family's private jet so it only took a couple of hours, but I loved going to new places. I had never been to Minneapolis before, which is strange as it is the largest city closest to us, but oh well. It was the most beautiful place I had ever been in my life. It was a big city, but it was small if that makes any sense. There were super tall buildings, but near those tall buildings were the Mississippi River and a lot of lakes. I asked my dad why we had never been there before and he said there was no oil there and no family that lived close. I guess that made sense.
The sectional tournament was at a very famous course outside of the city proper. It was strange because as we were driving to it, it ended up being similar to ND, and I think that put me at ease.
We stayed at a town house near the course. I don't know what I was expecting when we arrived, but, what happened was not what I expected. Two large guys joined us when we got out of the limo, and another adult also joined us, who turned out to be my caddy. The two large guys were security for myself and my family.
"Dad, why do we have security and why did you hire a professional caddy? I can carry my own bag."
My dad replied to me, actually matter of fact "Danny, I hired you a professional caddy because you do not know this course and he has carried the bag of some of the best, and I hate to tell you this, but, people do not like me because I am in the oil business, so I hired additional security for you during this tournament."
I guess I didn't mind the additional security. Who knows what will happen, but I did not want some professional caddy carrying my bag. In fact, I didn't want anybody carrying my bag. I did that myself thank you very much!
"Dad, I don't care about the security, I am used to that, but I don't want a professional caddy. I carry my own bag."
"Danny, a caddy is required here, so I figured I would hire you the best available."
Shit. Required? "Dad, if I find somebody I like, can we hire him instead? I am going to the course to practice. I am sure they have local caddies and stuff"
It was agreed, and I hired some local kid who was way younger than me. Turned out he was 13 and had just started. Perfect I thought.
We clicked really good and he helped me win the sectional tournament by 3 strokes and I was on my way to the US Open of Golf!
