"Nick? How are you feeling? How are your wounds?", Bill said, getting up and checking up on Nick.
"They're OK, they're really sore, but OK. I am glad I don't take off my shirt during a show or it would look really bad!", Nick said, grimacing as Bill lightly checked his handiwork.
"Kewl. We should be getting ready to land in DC here, so lets all buckle up and get ready for it.", Bill said.
As he spoke the captain's voice came through the intercom asking that all passengers fasten their seatbelts for landing. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Chapter 3 Begins Now....
Bill took his seat and fastened his seatbelt and then leaned back in the seat, closing his eyes and feeling his tension and stress begin to die down. As he sat there, he was surprised as a hand grabbed his and interlaced fingers squeezing gently. Bill opened his eyelids and looked over at Brian who smiled nervously and gave his hand a gentle squeeze.
"Hate to fly, huh?", Bill asked. Brian nodded affirmatively and as the plane began to land, also began to apply more pressure, squeezing Bill's hand, but not nearly enough so as to be painful.
As the plane slowed and taxied towards the gate, Bill looked over at Kevin, whose hand was also being similarly employed by the obviously nervous Nick. Bill looked back at Brian, sighing and beginning to grin at the youth. Brian looked at Bill questioningly.
"If I would have known that you got this nervous landing, I would have just given you a massage at the hotel.", Bill chuckled, causing Brian to grin and laugh, "Now all my work has been undone, your shoulders are back up by your ears."
Luckily, it was about 1:30 am when the boys departed the jet, so the fans waiting at National were almost non-existent. Bill kept hovering around Nick nervously, making sure that they weren't gonna get to him again if they got mobbed unexpectedly. Nick noticed this and laughed.
"Hey guys, I got me a bodyguard!", Nick yelled, as the other guys began to laugh at the sight of the Bill and Nick.
"Bodyguard, my butt!", Bill laughed, "If anyone rips MY shirt, your ass and theirs are MINE!"
This caused all the guys to fall out laughing, the tension level completely dropping to normal for the first time since before they had been mobbed in Charlotte.
When they reached the concourse, two limousines pulled up in front and the drivers opened the doors for them. Bill headed for the first limousine, with Nick, Kevin, Brian Howie, and AJ following closely while the tour manager and the rest of the other tour personnel headed for the other limousine. Nick sat in between Bill and Brian on one side of the limo and Kevin sat between AJ and Howie. The ride over the bridge and down Constitution Avenue was unadventurous, except for Nick asking Bill what monument was what and where, which Bill, having lived there for 8 years gladly pointed out. As the hung a left onto 9th street, NW and traveled a few blocks, Bill announced with a smile that they were there.
The guys waited in the limousine as the manager went inside the hotel to check-in to the hotel and grab all the room keys. He opened the door to the limousines and instructed the guys that their bags would be waiting by the elevators on their floor, and then passed out their room keys. The manager smiled at Bill as he handed him his key and asked if he was having a fun time.
Bill grinned and replied, "Would you like the Teen Beat Magazine answer or the real world answer?"
The manager began to laugh.
"If you want the first one, its , "They're so wonderful and awesome, I am totally stoked, I got to sit by Nick on the way over, I may never wash that side of my body again!" If you want the second one, its "It's been fun, these guys are really cool, down to earth and normal, and very friendly. And Nick...if you bleed or make a mess on my shirt, remember what I told you at the airport would happen to you!""
As the manager looked at Bill with a funny look, the guys began to roar with laughter and applaud!
"Very funny! I can see we're gonna have to give you cue cards before the press interview tomorrow!", the manager said as the guys' applause dwindled.
"What press interview? I have to speak at their press interview?!?", Bill replied nervously. "I don't recall that being mentioned when that guy called and said I won."
"Oh, I set it up since you got to spend some time with the guys tonight and the press wants to know what the real Backstreet Boys are like, from a sorta non-screaming fan, male perspective."
"Oh great!", Bill replied through a painfully faked smile. "I love public speaking."
"Any other fun surprises planned for tomorrow that might top that one, maybe surprise vasectomies for all of us with no anesthesia at DC General Hospital? A walking trip through S.E. DC dressed in KKK outfits is always just a whole bucket of fun I hear.", Bill said sarcastically as the guys roar with laugh again, causing the tour manager to look around nervously.
"Well....enough of that, you guys, head to your rooms. Room service is still available if you are hungry. If you want something else, ask the hotel staff or Bill and maybe it can be delivered or picked up.", the tour manager replied.
Bill and the guys head for the first elevator and made their way up to their floor, and then grabbed their luggage. Bill looked at the number on his key and then looked at the doors as he walked down the hall, finally reaching his room. He opened the door and walked inside, dropped the suitcase on the floor and did a facedive onto the bed stretching out and yawning after his long day. He then got up and used the bathroom, quickly changing into some shorts and a t-shirt, then laid down on the bed and turned on the TV.
As Bill flipped through the channels, his eyes widened as he caught a glimpse of his face on the news. He turned up the volume as he heard the newscaster finish remarking about how the man, identified as William Michaels of North Carolina saved Backstreet Boy Nick Carter from a mob of crazed fans at the airport in Charlotte before they boarded their jet for their flight to DC. The newscaster went on to remark how the Michaels then treated Carter for his cuts and lacerations on board the airplane after take-off.
Bill dropped the remote and stared wide-eyed at the TV until the next story came on the news. Bill felt the blood drain from his face as he began to imagine how badly the press conference was gonna suck the next day. A knock on the door brought Bill back from his thoughts and he went over and opened the door to see all the guys waiting.
"Bill, did you see the news?", Kevin began and then looked at Bill, "Ouuuuchhh, yeah, you did! Don't worry, it'll be OK. We'll all be there with you! Don't stress out over it."
"I am fine. Really. Fine, no problem. Who leaked this to the press??....I just need to know.", Bill replied flatly, "I am feeling the need to open a very large can of "shut the fuck up" on them and then follow it up with a jumbo can of "ass whoopin'!" AJ and Howie began to chuckle as a small cough was heard in the hall and the road manager peeked over AJ's shoulder.
"Did you see the news? Was that a great media blitz or what? We got 130,000 sympathy emails from fans in the last hour since they began televising that story. I love free publicity!" The word "publicity" was barely out of his mouth when Bill reached over AJ's shoulder and lifted the road manager up by his throat and pulled him into the bathroom. The guys just watched in awe as Bill carried their manager into the bathroom by his neck, slamming and locking the door after him.
"HEY! What the hell was that for?", the publicity manager asked irritably, as Bill slammed him into the nearest wall.
"What was the for? You are such a jerk! I am terrified of public speaking for one, and seeing myself on the news like that almost gave me a heart attack. God, man. Do you have any sense in your head at ALL!! At least you could have told me. I wouldn't be nearly as mad if you had mentioned that I was gonna be on the news and at a press conference. It's like....respect. You haven't shown me any respect at all!"
"I.....I am really, really sorry!", the road manager began, "I just saw the great PR opportunity when you charged after Nick and rescued him, then fixed him up. I just didn't think that you might react so badly. It was a thoughtless mistake and I am really sorry."
"It's OK. The apology is accepted, just TELL me next time. I would have probably been cool with it all if I had been TOLD.", Bill replied enunciating the importance of the communication to the road manager by poking him in the chest as he talked.
Bill opened the door to the bathroom and Nick fell face forward onto the floor, obviously eavesdropping. Bill rolled his eyes and shook his head and grinned.
"Nick, if you needed to go that bad, you should have knocked.", Bill grinned ruefully as the blond blushed scarlet.
The road manager pushed past the guys aand headed out the door, apologizing one more time to Bill as he left the room. As the door shut, Nick began to laugh.
"I thought you were gonna beat the shit out of him, you looked way pissed when you dragged him in there by his neck!", he replied chuckling.
"I was kinda mad. It just felt so disrespectful for him to do that to me. So I put the fear of me into him.", Bill replied grinning.
"It worked.", Kevin laughed, "I think he went back to his room to change his underwear."
The guys sat down on the two full size beds and began to chat about the concert in Charlotte and the gaffs that they had made. After a few minutes, Bill looked at the guys and asked if they were hungry as he was gonna call room service and order some food.
"Yeah...Can I get a cheeseburger, I am starved!", Nick complained, rubbing his stomach as the other guys nodded their interest in food as well.
"OK, just write down your orders on this hotel message pad and I will call them in.", Bill replied, handing the pad to the guys. The guys wrote their orders down and in no time, Bil had called them in and the food arrived.
As they finished eating, Nick turned to Bill, "So, who are you bringing to the show tomorrow?"
"My sister Kathy", Bill replied, "I was hoping that she and Howie could chat a few minutes. She's really cool and I think you might like talking with her. She is the head of nursing at the orthopaedic unit of INNOVA's joint replacement center." "Really?", Howie said, joining in the conversation, "That sounds awesome. Is she a hunny?"
"My sister looks like Barbie, she's very pretty. She is really smart, she got the hottie and the smart genes in my family. I thought you might relate to her in another way as well, Howie. My sister has had lupus for several years now. She has had both her hips replaced because of it. She's got a great attitude and she's easy to talk to. I know your sister died from lupus and I thought maybe you and Kathy could bond and talk about that together.", Bill replied.
"Wow.....that's really awesome of you to think of me there. I think it'd be awesome to sit and talk with her.", Howie said, smiling. "Thank you, man. That's really cool, ya know?"
"Well, guys. I had better let you all get to bed so that you are all not like zombie's tomorrow for that press conference.", Bill said, grinning at the groans of the guys at the thought of an early morning.
Howie and AJ headed towards the door and Nick, Brian and Kevin waited til the door shut before sitting back down on the bed beside Bill.
"Thanks for hooking Howie up with your sister, Bill.", Brian began putting his hand on Bill's arm, "He's been real upset by his sisters death and I think this will be really good for him to just sit and talk with her." The other guys nodded and mumbled agreement at Brian's statement.
"So, you guys headed for bed, or do you wanna sit down and veg out for a few more minutes?", Bill grinned as the guys proceeded to flop back down on the beds.
After much channel surfing, they all decided to watch cartoons on the cartoon network and just talk amongst themselves. As Bill began to nod off to sleep, he reminded Nick to come around the next morning and he would check and replace his bandages. Then Bill fell asleep.
The next morning, as Bill awoke, shaking off the bonds of Morpheus, he realized that he was not alone in the bed, and that someone's arms were around him. Bill shifted a little, opening his eyes as Kevin and Brian's voices issued a warm good morning greeting.
