The train ride back to downtown Chicago was uneventful. We talked nonstop about our week. As soon as we got on the train to Glen Ellyn, Mark called the Smiths to let them know what time our train would be in so they could pick us up. The train was so crowded that we needed to stand but I didn't mind because Danny was just a little ways away. This second leg of the train ride seemed to take as long as the whole week. I hadn't noticed this many stops on the way in last Sunday. The only good thing is that at least the train cleared out some and I could sit down. My feet were killing me. With all the marching, running, and standing, I developed blisters on both heels.

Finally we arrived at Glen Ellyn and disembarked. I spotted Danny about 50 yards down and took off running towards him. He ran too. I've seen these movies where two lovers are running towards each other in a field and meet in the middle with a huge twisting, turning embrace and lots of kissing. Until this moment I always found it kind of comical but not now. I guess that our embrace was kind of anticlimactic because neither one of us slowed down enough and we ended up knocking each other on the ground. We weren't hurt so we both just started laughing. Anyone around us who witnessed what just happened must have thought we were crazy. We didn't care. Finally we got back up and hugged. Danny kissed me on the cheek and I returned his kiss. By then Mike, Mark, and the Smiths caught up with us.

"That wasn't the most romantic meeting I've ever seen but at least neither one of you seems to be hurt," said Mrs. Smith.

"I wish I had a video camera," said Mr. Smith.

We got a few strange looks but hey - we're in love. We all piled into the Smiths' car and went to our apartment. I went in and packed a bag with clothes and stuff. Then I said goodbye to Mark and Mike and then got back in the Smiths' car.

"It's a little late for dinner at home tonight, Tommy," said Mr. Smith. "We thought that we could go to an Italian Restaurant in Oak Brook we found. How's that sound?"

"That's fine with me, it's got to be better than the chow I've been eating all week!"

"Chow's what you call food now? What else have they been teaching you, Tommy?"

"Hmmm, two words - prostate exam."

"Omigod, we're going to have to lock up the K-Y and Vaseline," Mr. Smith said, laughing.

"That's not funny, Don (Mr. Smith's first name). I don't want to be taking either one of these boys to the hospital at 2:00 AM, bleeding down there because of some experimenting gone wrong!"

"Don't worry, Ann (Mrs. Smith's first name), I'll have another talk with the boys later tonight or tomorrow."

"Prostate exam? What are you talking about? I really don't have a clue as to what you're talking about," exclaimed Danny.

I got an evil grin on my face. I really opened up a can of worms but I didn't care. I was holding Danny's hand and would have him with me all weekend!

"You're going to find some changes in Tommy, Danny. He's been through way more then most 14-year-olds go through. He's growing up too fast. Don't get me wrong - I don't disagree with what you are doing, Tommy. As a matter of fact I envy you. I went to Army boot camp when I was 18, 20 years ago. At the time it was the hardest thing I ever did but the further away I get from it, the fonder the memory is. I learned things that can't be taught anyplace else. I think everyone should go through basic training. Tommy's doing more before breakfast than we do all day. The problem is he's not doing things that other 14-year-olds do on their summer vacation. At least you have weekends off and can relax some. We'll need to have a talk later, boys. We'll talk about prostate exams and some other things. Okay?"

"Thanks, Dad, it's just I kind of feel left out."

"I'm sure Tommy misses you too but this is something he has to do. If you ask him why he needs to do it, he probably can't answer you, but deep down there's a lot going on right now. Tommy has a job now. It's not an easy job. But it has its own rewards."

"Speaking of rewards, I need to open a bank account tomorrow. I have a pay check for almost $400 for this week's work."

"Wow, you're rich, Tommy."

"No, we're rich, Danny."

"That's what I'm talking about, Danny. That's as much money as your mother was making as an administrative assistant in Springfield. Her new job is going to pay more than that but the cost of living is higher here than in Springfield. However, the work you are doing is also dangerous. It's not like a paper route and mowing lawns. It's a real job. If you do as good as I know you can, Tommy, you might be working full time all the way through high school with a full time job waiting for you when you finish. Thinking 4 years from now might be a little overwhelming right now but it must be considered. Do you think you would be interested in police work for a living, Tommy?"

"I think at some point every kid wants to be a policeman or fireman. To tell you the truth, it does interest me."

"Then you need to be careful you don't do anything to mess that opportunity up. You can't enforce the law if you break it. Do your best, Tommy, and your dreams can come true. We'll talk later about what you're getting into."

We made it to the Italian Restaurant in Oak Brook and it looked like a really expensive restaurant. Mr. Smith approached the hostess. "We have a reservation for two parties of two under the name of Smith."

Two parties of two - Wow, Danny and I are going to get our own table. Danny just looked at me with his own sly smile.

"Eat whatever you want, boys. Just because they have pizza here is no excuse to have that. You can have pizza anytime. Try something you have never had before. Have an appetizer. The fried calamari is great here."

"What is calamari?" asked Danny.

"Fried fish, you'll love it. Take your time too. We're in no hurry, boys."

The hostess led us to 'our' table on the other side of the restaurant from the Smiths. Danny and I sat across from each other. There was a long tablecloth so we both peeled off our shoes and played 'footies' under the table.

"You'll never know how much I missed you this week, Tommy."

"I missed you too, Danny. I look at it this way. Lots of people have been really nice to me, helping me get here. If it weren't for Mr. Kelly and Detective Samuels I wouldn't be here now. I don't know where everything I'm doing is going to take me but your dad is right. This is something I have to do. And I don't know why. It's like breathing. If you try to hold your breath, sooner or later you have to breathe. I'm not being mistreated in any way for the first time in my life."

"I wish that I could be with you, Tommy. But I'm not strong enough."

"I'm not so sure about that, Danny. It takes more strength for you to be by yourself all day than for me. I'm busy all the time. It gives me little time to think and feel sorry for myself - losing my family - and missing you. You might have more strength than you think."

"Hi, Gentlemen, sorry to interrupt. My name is Art and I'll be your waiter tonight. Can I start you off with something to drink?"

"I'll take iced tea," I replied.

"Me too," said Danny.

"How about an appetizer? The fried calamari is very good here."

"We'll try that, my dad says it's good."

"Your dad must have good taste. Look over the menu and I'll get your drinks and appetizer started."

We looked over the menu and I decided on chicken Alfredo and Danny ordered stuffed ravioli. The calamari came with our iced tea and it was good. I ate mine plain and Danny ate his with marinara sauce. Then the salads came. We both had house salads with bread sticks. It wasn't as good as the salad I had with Mike and Mark my first day in town, but it was good. Then the food arrived and after 'chow' all week I was in heaven. The whole time I told Danny all about my adventure that week. I purposely left out the part about the prostate exam because I felt it would be more fun to just show him.

"How was your meal, gentlemen?" asked Art.

"Great!" we both said at once.

"Your parents said they will be taking care of your bill. Would you like any dessert?"

"Actually they aren't my parents. They're his but we're as close as brothers. I don't think I could eat another bite."

Art squatted down and lowered his voice. "I noticed how close you two are. I could see from across the room that you two were playing footies under the table. You might want to put your shoes back on before you get up. I also noticed that way you were looking at each other. Don't worry, I think it cool, what you have together. I have a good friend that's gay and I kind of know what to look for. Not everyone is as understanding as I am. You seem like a couple of nice guys and I'd hate to see you get hurt."

Art took our plates and left to take care of other tables.

"He seems like a nice guy, Tommy. He has a good point. If he can tell we're together, others can too. "

"Dad wants to talk with us later about things. Perhaps how we act in public is one of the things he wants to talk about. We did make kind of put on a show at the train station today."

"Look at Mike and Mark. As we just found out, their love is well known but this week no one had a clue that they are together. I think we can learn from them. I don't know what's going to happen when I go back to Springfield in two months but I get the feeling that the whole town will know about me by then. It's going to be really hard to face all my old friends with them all knowing that I'm gay."

"We can make a clean start here but someone from our new high school could be in the restaurant right now and if they are as perceptive as Art we could already be outted!"

Danny's parents came over and we left.

"How was dinner, guys? Have a good time?"

"It was great, Dad, thanks. I really liked the calamari. What kind of fish is it?"

"That's a good question, Danny. Are you sure you want me to answer it?"

"How bad can it be, Mr. Smith? You said it was just fish."

"It's fried squid, good, isn't it?"

Both Danny and I made puking noises. Mr. Smith warned us not to puke in his car. It was good though. By the time we got home, with the long week and the big meal I was ready for bed. Danny however was full of energy. Mr. Smith decided to wait until tomorrow to have a talk with us. We went up to bed at 9:00 and by 9:30 I was sound asleep. That was enough time for both Danny and me to get off several times. I was so horny I stayed hard in between. We fell asleep in each other's arms.

At 5:30 AM my eyes sprang open and I was wide-awake. I guess they have me trained. I managed to get up and go to the bathroom without waking Danny. I went into the kitchen and found Mr. Smith drinking his coffee.

"Looks like your body clock is set on military time, Tommy."

"I might as well keep it that way. Make it that much easier come Monday morning."

"Good idea. I'm kind of glad you're up, Tommy - I was just thinking about you. There are a few things I need to talk to you about and it's perhaps better if we keep some of it between us. I don't want to worry Danny. I've had several long talks with Mr. Kelly. I always knew you and Danny were best friends and loved each other. I didn't see just how deep your love was until we moved up here. It killed me to see how hurt and miserable he was after we moved up here. That's when I saw just how deep his love is for you. I don't ever want to see him so hopeless again."

"Mr. Kelly says they have enough evidence to convict your father for child abuse. The welts they found on your back matched the pattern of a belt he has. That was taken into evidence. They don't want to do anything about it at this time because he's not fighting to keep you and they want to get him for something that's going to put him away. However, Mr. Kelly has seen many cases like this before. There is little evidence that your mother was involved in the beatings. She also didn't do anything to stop it. If your father is put away, she's going to blame you. Her way of getting back at you will probably be to go to court to get custody of you. After she gets custody she'll probably ship you off to the worst place you can imagine. Probably some right wing center to brainwash you into thinking that you aren't gay."

"In these types of cases, unless there is abuse or neglect, the parent always wins. She could say that it was your father's entire fault, that he was the one who beat you and tossed you away like yesterday's garbage. Mr. Kelly says that she will probably try to block us getting custody of you by saying that we allow you to sleep with our son. Now that's going to be kind of hard to prove unless there is physical evidence that shows sexual activity. There is not a court in this country that is going to give us custody if we are allowing you to have sex with our son. I'm not saying that you can't make love with Danny, Tommy. I'm saying that if a doctor gives you an exam and finds physical evidence of sex, you're going to lose Danny and us. Also if people see you showing physical displays of affection in public they're going to assume you're having sex."

"There are those that are saying that training you to be a police officer is a waste of time. They say that you're not able to make adult decisions. I don't agree with them. I've known you all your life, Tommy, and I must tell you I'm proud of you. Most 14 year-olds going through what you've been through the last two weeks would have had a nervous breakdown by now. You seem to be just getting stronger. I know you're a tough kid, Tommy, but it's ok to let people know if you're overwhelmed. I want to see you make it, Tommy, but you need to know what you're up against so that you can make the right decisions."

"First, you are being watched and evaluated. No only at Great Lakes and here too. You can't enforce the law if you also break it. There are no guarantees. Even if you do everything right you could end up in an unhappy environment. You learned that, living with your parents. I've seen you do the right things many times just to get shot down. Life is not fair. On the other hand, how many 14 year-olds make almost $400 a week? If you show yourself to be an asset you could find yourself with a full time job throughout high school. It's up to you, Tommy."

"You need to know where I stand on some things. I don't approve of 14 year-olds having sex on a regular bases. It can be harmful. However, sexual experimentation is normal for boys your age. I define experimentation as a onetime thing. Danny tells me everything and I know that the most you two have done is jacking each other off. I don't consider masturbation sex. Danny also told me that he would do anything that you asked him to do. I don't approve of you going any further than you have but I will let you make the decision. I hope you make the right one. The best decision you can make is to talk to me before you try anything new. For example, massaging the prostate while masturbating can feel fantastic but it can also cause pain, cause internal bleeding, and spread disease if not done properly. I'll be happy to inform you the proper way to do things without getting hurt, or find you the information. I'm not going to tell you what to do, Tommy, unless you show me that you are incapable of making the RIGHT decisions for yourself. I've already given Danny instructions. I know you will make the right decision, Tommy."

"I know I've thrown lots of information at you, Tommy. Especially this early in the morning but I want you to think about what I've told you. You have any questions?"

"Just one, Mr. Smith. I know you love me but how do you love me? Do you love me as Danny's best friend or is it more than that?"

"This is going to sound kind of strange to you, Tommy, but I love you as much as I do my own son. There are several reasons for that. First, I know how little love you got from your natural parents and I've tried to make up for that. Second, I choose to love you. You can choose your friends but you can't choose your family. I have to love Danny because he's my son but I choose to love you. Most of all, I love you for making my son so happy and loving him so much. It's easy to love someone who gives his love so freely."

It's not very often that I cry but tears started streaming down my face. I hugged Mr. Smith and cried myself out. I've never felt so loved in my entire life. After I calmed down, Mr. Smith and I prepared breakfast. I told him about my week and he told me several times how the hardest part was behind me but it was not going to get any easier either. By the time we finished, Danny and Mrs. Smith were up. They were both surprised to find we had actually prepared a very good breakfast. After breakfast Danny and I decided to take a walk.

"You were sure up early, Tommy."

"After getting up at 5:30 all week I guess I'm used to it."

"Dad's been having long talks with me all week, I guess he talked to you too. You seem deep in thought, Tommy."

"Yes, he did, I'm still thinking about everything he said."

"Dad's a morning person. I hate it when he throws a bunch of stuff at me early in the morning."

"I don't mind. I just keep thinking about one thing he told me. He says that there are some that think I'm not able to make adult decisions. I'm not sure I understand what he means by that."

"I think I can explain, Tommy. An adult decision affects other people than yourself. Often in an adult decision, no matter what you do has good and bad results. I know this one because I've been dealing with a decision my parents made last month. Dad's company basically told him they needed him to move up here. They offered him a huge increase. They offered to pay all his expenses involved in the move, including selling our old house. If he decided he didn't want to move, his company would have been very upset at him. They might even find a way to fire him. If he took the job, then my mother would either have to quit her job and go with him or leave him and stay in Springfield. I've lived in Springfield all my life and all my friends live there. I saw my world fall apart when he said we were moving. I knew I could live without you, Tommy, but I didn't want to. This is an adult decision. It affects the whole family. No matter what he does, someone gets hurt. But there is also the possibility that things will turn out better than before. Dad got a huge pay increase and we have a better house. My mom has found an even better job and now you're back with me. At least on weekends through the summer. Then we'll just have to see what happens. Dad says having sex, driving a car, voting, working, and many other things involve adult decisions. He says that adults consider what's going to happen to others before making decisions. He says children depend on their parents to make adult decisions for them and that teenagers start to make adult decisions but they still have their parents as a safety net to bail them out from wrong decisions that they have made."

"Dad likes to give me enough rope to hang myself, as he puts it. You can expect he'll do the same with you. For example he'll let me go anywhere I want to go, as long as he and my mom both know where I'm going and when I'll be back. If I can't make it on time, I have to call. As long as I do that, I can make my own decision. If I mess up, then I have to ask permission. I can only stay as long as they say and go where they approve. They say if I act like an adult they will treat me like one but if I act like a child they will also treat me like a child. It's up to me. Does that help you understand, Tommy?"

"Yes, it does. He had the 'I don't want you having sex with my son' talk this morning. Not because he says so but because we're not ready. He didn't say we couldn't try it, just that he doesn't want us doing it all the time. It sounds to me like he's giving me enough rope to hang myself. If you're used to hamburger and you find out you can have steak every day, why go back to hamburger?"

"I think that's the most profound thing you have ever said, Tommy. Dad took three hours to tell me the same thing. I told him this week that I wanted to try oral sex with you and he felt that was a bad idea for the reasons you just said. 'Cept he took three hours saying it. I love you, Tommy, and I want to make you happy but I also don't want to hurt you. Or my parents - I love them too. I'm willing to wait until I know we can be together long term to take our relationship to a higher level."

"You guys want to play some basketball?" two guys that looked to be our age playing in their driveway asked us as we walked past their house.

I looked at Danny and he smiled and nodded his head yes. "Sure, I'm Tommy and this is Danny."

"I'm Rick and this is my friend Bill. You just moved in the old Jones house, didn't you?"

"I just moved here but I don't know if it's the Jones house or not. It's the last one at the end of the block."

"Yea, that it. You'll be going to school with us unless you're going to some private school. What grade are you in?"

"We're going into the 9th grade. This is my best friend from Springfield and he's staying up here this summer with friends. He might stay and go to school here too."

"We're going into the 9th grade too. It sucks, going from the top of our middle school to being nobody freshmen at high school." said Rick.

"At least you still have your friends to help you. All my friends are back in Springfield."

"I know how you feel. I moved here from Gary two years ago but Bill became my friend and really helped me out, getting to know people. We'll help you too."

"Cool, let's play some b-ball."

"Cool, for the purpose of getting to know each other, how about Bill and Tommy play on one team and we can play against them, Danny?" said Rick.

"Great, let's play."

We played for about an hour and had a good time. They have a pool in their back yard and invited us over later to go swimming. We told them perhaps tomorrow after we talked to the Smiths. We went home and Mrs. Smith took Danny and me to a Bank One branch to open up a savings account for me. They were hesitant to open an account without my parents until I showed them the State Police ID I'd gotten earlier in the week. They told me that it would take 3 days before I could get any cash because they have to wait for the check to clear. What's up with that? They don't trust the state of Illinois to pay their payroll checks?

After a light lunch, Danny and I decided to unpack my stuff.

"Danny, I think it's best if we put all my stuff in the spare room."

"You don't want to stay in my room?" Danny said with a sad look.

"It's not that. It's just that if we have some friends over like Rick and Bill it might look kind of odd if we share the same room. If there were separate beds it would be ok but with just your queen bed it might raise some questions. I guess this is one of those adult decisions I need to make. We can still sleep together but I think it's also important for us to each have our own space."

"You're probably right, Tommy. I didn't think of it that way. I'm sure not ready for the whole world to know about us."

We got busy and in a couple of hours got all my stuff unpacked in the other room. Mr. Smith walked in just as we were finishing, with a surprised look on his face.

"I'm pleasantly surprised to see you unpacking your stuff into the spare room, Tommy!"

"What? You gave me enough rope and I didn't hang myself?"

"That's one way of putting it. I guess my talk this morning did some good."

"That and the talk I had with Danny this morning. We made some new friends this morning and I wondered how we would explain why we're sleeping in the same bed. Also they invited us to come over and go swimming with them tomorrow."

"Did you get their phone number?"

"Yes, I did, here it is."

"Ok I'll call their parents and get to know them some. I'm glad to hear you're getting to know someone here, Danny. Perhaps they can help get you out of your room this week while Tommy is gone."

"Their names are Bill and Rick and they are our age and will be going to school with us."

"That's even better. I'll talk to their folks. What other trouble did you to get into while I was off at work?"

"I opened up a savings account. I should be able to build up some money this summer."

"That's real good, Tommy. I'm proud of you. You made good decisions today. Dinner will be ready in a few minutes, boys. You two kind of smell!"

"Awww, Dad! That's not nice to say."

"Well, it's true. You don't have much time so I suggest that you two jump in the shower together."

With that Dad left. I hadn't taken a shower this morning and with the basketball and unpacking I guess I did kind of smell. Danny and I went into the bathroom and quickly stripped. We often took showers together when I was at the Smiths' old house but it had been a while. We got down to business, washing each other. It sure is easier than washing yourself. We didn't play around in the shower, as tempting as it was. The Smiths are picky about us wasting hot water.

We went to dinner and Mrs. Smith made her spaghetti. It's my favorite. She puts everything in it I like and nothing I don't.

"I called Rick's parents, boys. They also want to meet us. Their last name is Mitchell, Jim and Nancy. They're also inviting Bill's parents, Don and Judy Miller. They are all close friends and often get together for a back yard BBQ and pool party. Jim Mitchell works at the same place I do but I haven't met him yet. I also called Mike and Mark and invited them to come over for the party too. They really like the idea, seeing as you'll be leaving with them late tomorrow afternoon, Tommy. Sound okay with you guys?"

"Sounds ok with me, how about you, Tommy?"

"Sounds like fun actually. Tell you the truth, I'm going to miss this good cooking and spending time with Danny but I'm looking forward to getting back to training this week. I'm learning all kinds of new things. This week we start self-defense training and weapons training. The food isn't real bad but I don't eat the soup!"

Mr. Smith was drinking a beer and he almost choked on it and spit it all over the table.

"Why wouldn't you want to eat the soup, Tommy?" asked Mrs. Smith.

"I'll explain it to you later," replied Mr. Smith.

The rest of dinner was just small talk. Danny and I went up to his room and played video games. About 9:00 PM I started getting really tired and laid down on Danny's bed. Next thing I knew a naked and excited Danny was undressing me. I pretended to be asleep. As soon as he got my pants undone he knew for sure that at least part of me was awake. I remained lifeless until Danny got all my clothes off. Then I tackled him and pinned him on the bed.

"Thought you could take advantage of me, did you?" I leaned in and kissed him just as lightly and tenderly as I could. We wrapped our arms around each other as if letting go would cause us to fall to our death.

"So, Tommy, are you going to show me what a prostate exam is?"

"I'm not a doctor, Danny."

"We've played doctor before!"

"Yes, we have when we were little. But we're not little anymore. I can tell you it was weird. First it felt very uncomfortable. Then he hit something inside of me and I felt waves of pleasure going up my backbone. Then I thought I was going to cum. Then it was over. I need more information before we try anything like that. I love you so much, Danny, and I couldn't handle the thought of hurting you. I'll talk to Mike and Mark and see if I can find out more. I'm horny though and I need another kiss. Let's just jack each other off while we tongue wrestle."

After bringing each other off we fell asleep in each other's arms. Spending two nights a week in Danny's arms just isn't enough. I need to find a way to get Danny with me during the week too!
